    Overview In addition to the academic requirements, students at Boston University are required to complete fieldwork observations in art classes in area schools. At the end of the program, students are eligible to obtain two initial visual arts teaching licenses from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education—one for secondary and one for primary. This requires two 300-hour practicums in the field with an Art Education department–approved mentor.Learning OutcomesDemonstrate studio skills necessary to teach a variety of media and strategies for embedding concepts.Understand the methods and processes necessary to nurture artistic behaviors in students.Design developmentally appropriate curriculum.Develop and implement classroom practices that align with the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers.Demonstrate an awareness and ability to integrate contemporary art and issues into their teaching practice with a global and cross-cultural lens.     The Art Education major at Boston University provides students with the opportunity to become skilled artists as well as to prepare for teaching art in pre-K–12 settings. Studio, education, and liberal arts courses are required study.
