About
The first year concentrates on core traditional and digital skills for animation and animated storytelling. Youll improve your skills and learn how to work as part of a creative team.
During the second and third years, youll develop your specialist areas of animation and identify your strengths in small production teams, working on live briefs. Youll also work towards high levels of skill in animated outcomes, whether these are in pre-production (eg, concept, storyboard, backgrounds, character design) or in 2D traditional or digital/ stop-motion production (eg, character animation, sets, props, puppet and model-making), or post-production compositing.
By the time you graduate, youll have produced an exciting showreel and your own short graduation film all youll need to impress employers and to make your start in this dynamic industry. Youll also develop lots of transferable skills, including team working and time management.

Teaching
Your practical work will be an exciting mix of taught techniques and skills by specialists in industry as well our core teaching staff. The live briefs that run-in years 2 and 3 give students an exciting insight into how the industry works. This is also complimented by strong theoretical principles and a professional attitude to your work through business studies and how to present yourself in the competitive marketplace.
Assessment
You will be assessed primarily through coursework this will be a mix of summative and written and verbal formative feedback such as Dailys' and critiques.

Typical A-Level Offer
BCC - CDD to include a relevant art and design subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical Welsh BACC Offer
Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level with a relevant art and design subject (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical BTEC Offer
BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass in a relevant subject (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).
Typical IB Offer
Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 29 overall including 5 or above in English at standard level
Typical Access to HE Offer
Pass the Access to HE Diploma with a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points
Additional Requirements
GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances

During the second year of your animation degree, there is an opportunity to apply for a place on our exchange programme to study at one of our partner institutions internationally.
Many career opportunities exist in the animation industry. Our graduates have worked on productions such as Fantastic Mr Fox, Tim Burtons The Corpse Bride, Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and The Cramp Twins, at prestigious studios such as Warner Bros, a-Productions, Aardman Animations, Cosgrove Hall, Hot Animation, Calon, Telemagination or HRA Associates.
Our Careers and Employability Service
As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.
