BA (Hons) Business Management (Enterprise and Innovation) (Top Up)

    About

The current industry requirement of graduates is that not only are they able to manage business processes, but continuously identify opportunities, solve problems and develop growth avenues. This course will equip students for a future career as corporate entrepreneurs within a large and growing organisation or as an entrepreneur running his/her own business. The Course includes an Enterprise Based Learning module, whereby students will manage a real micro-business thereby augmenting the theoretical element of the course with a practical and hence experiential learning opportunity. In addition to business acumen, the course aims to develop valuable and transferable skills and knowledge in enterprise management, project planning, opportunity development, creative thinking and innovation.

This course runs for a single season and enables students with level 5 pre-requisite qualifications to top up to a full BA degree award with honours. The Course comprises six modules, each of which has an academic value of 20 credits. These modules include the following (note that there are no optional modules in this course):

    Applied Management
This comprehensive module addresses many facets of management practice and aims to provide the students with the knowledge and skills necessary to embark on a career in middle management.

    Business Research: Principles and Practice
This module equips students with the knowledge and skills required to undertake a research project. Students will therefore be introduced to the tools and techniques they will need to conduct a real investigation into a business problem.

    Business Strategy
This module aims to develop a conceptual and critical understanding of the internal and external factors that affect the development of a business strategy within an organisation.

    Innovation Management
This module focuses on the role of creativity, product and service design and development, knowledge and technology innovation at different levels of business.

    Business Ethics and Sustainability
This module introduces students to the particular problems and opportunities experienced in adopting or ignoring business ethics and corporate social responsibility. The module also aims to develop a critical understanding of sustainable business issues and how they can be managed, promoted and developed in a business context.

    Enterprise Based Learning (Project)
The module provides the opportunity for students to synthesize their learning from previous studies and apply their knowledge and skills to support the sustainability and growth of a social enterprise that will be launched and managed at the University campus.

    Teaching

The course is delivered as a blended approach with a balanced mix of face-to-face and online learning activity.

The course includes a field visit to a real organisation that promotes experiential learning opportunities.

Students will be expected to fully engage with the course and attend lectures, workshops and tutorials.

    Assessment

The assessment process is varied in order to enhance learning potential and includes portfolios, essays, presentations and reports.

There are no formal examinations in this course.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Successful completion of a HND in Business Studies or Business & Accounting, a Foundation Degree in Business Studies, Service Sector Management or Retail Management, or an equivalent qualification e.g. a Diploma in Higher Education or ILM Leadership and Management (Level 5).

Consideration will be made on an individual basis for alternative qualifications and/or relevant experience providing students can demonstrate sufficient related knowledge and understanding to equip them for level 6 study in a business discipline. Applicants will need to demonstrate 240 credits (or equivalent) and the Universitys Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy may feature in the decision to offer a place on the course.

For international students, information can be found on the Universitys website and international applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.

    Career

The course is highly beneficial to those who may wish to work for an employer that focuses on innovation and/or corporate entrepreneurship.

How does the course prepare me for employment?

The course does not offer placements. However, the Enterprise Based Learning module requires students to manage a real social enterprise from the University campus and therefore promotes leadership, analytical, organisational and management skills in a real-life setting.

Once graduated, students may decide to start a business of their own or engage in corporate entrepreneurship, i.e. apply entrepreneurial activity within an organisation. Graduates that possess such entrepreneurial skills, attitude and approaches are increasingly sought after by employers in the highly competitive modern business environment.
