Why choose this course?

The BA (Hons) Education, Childhood and Youth provides you with the knowledge and skills required for a range of careers working with children and young people, and the services which support them in education and wider contexts. The course is ideal for both people new to the area and experienced staff seeking career development. If you are interested in becoming a primary school teacher, we offer the guarantee of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Primary Education interview upon completion of this degree (providing you are on track to achieve a 2:2 or above and meet the course entry requirements). We also have excellent progression opportunities leading to our Master’s in Education.

During your course, you will consider a range of issues and perspectives surrounding working with children and young people in educational contexts. You will consider contemporary issues in relation to education and children’s lives, and the reality of growing up in the 21^st century, including exploring issues around climate change, Black Lives Matter, mental health, social media, Covid-19, and LBGT student experiences. You will also explore the role of play in child development, how education can be used as a tool for overcoming challenging situations, education policy, and the types of schooling and support provided in the UK and internationally, as well as much more. We work with our students to explore and challenge a wide range of educational ideas and developments, and we value your perspectives and diverse experiences of education. We encourage independent thought and curiosity, and a belief in the potential of education as a tool for improving people’s lives.

Work experience placements are an integral part of the course and can be negotiated in a variety of settings such as hospices, children’s centres, charities, pupil referral units, prisons, youth centres, social work, schools, and other relevant settings.

We recognise that you will have a unique learning journey and we will maximise your potential through a wide variety of optional choices such as presentations, written assessments, reflective journals, report writing, peer mentoring, and written plans. Our course does not include any exams and we work hard to make our assessments inclusive and relevant to your career goals. We usually teach in smaller classroom-based student groups, as opposed to larger lecture theatres, to give you a supportive and personalised learning experience. Our staff work hard to help develop the confidence of our students.

The BA (Hons) Education, Childhood and Youth is three years full-time, and can be studiedPART-TIMEwhich requires you to attend daytime sessions. However, if you are employed in Early Years and already have a level 3 qualification, we offer a part-timeFoundation Degree in Early Years Services orFoundation Degree in Supporting Children in Primary Education at our partner colleges. After completing your part-time foundation degree, you can then progress onto a final year of a part-time BA (Hons) degree.

You will develop an independent, reflective, and self-managed approach to study and utilise skills appropriate for study in Higher Education.
You will Improve confidence in learning, study, and approaches to finding information and be aware of your existing transferable skills and new skills and how these may be developed
You will develop knowledge, be able to critically analyse, make judgments and evaluate key concepts, theories and principles in the area of education studies, childhood and youth
Analyse inclusion concepts, theories and issues in a systematic way. Identify and reflect on potential connections and discontinuities between aspects of subject knowledge and their application in social policies and contexts
Process and synthesise a range of relevant empirical and theoretical data to present and justify your chosen position
Reflect critically on your own value system and relate this to the construction of childhood and youth, and discover how your own values align with the wider education system.
You will also develop and consolidate a range of employability skills, including sharing information, working with and in groups, presenting information, digital literacy and critical thinking skills
Develop your professional and ethical practice to improve outcomes for children, young people, adults, and their families

Foundation Programme

We offer two International Foundation Year (IFY) programmes, allowing progression onto a wide range of undergraduate degrees at the University of Wolverhampton:

The 1 Year stand-alone International Foundation Year (IFY)
The 4 Year integrated International Foundation Year (IFY) programme which includes a foundation year and degree

The 1 year stand-alone International Foundation Year (IFY) course is designed for international students (yr for students for whom English is not their first language) whose qualifications are insufficient for direct entry to undergraduate study and/or those whose English language level does not meet the minimum criteria. The 1 year IFY course provides preparation in academic subjects, English language and study skills up to the required level for progression onto most undergraduate degree courses at the University of Wolverhampton (subject to professional body requirements) in Arts; Education, Health and Wellbeing; Science and Engineering and Social Sciences. The IFY is delivered at our Telford and City Campuses. Entry to these foundation programmes may require you to have studied specific subjects at high school

The 4 Year International Foundation Year (IFY) integrated degree routes in Arts; Education, Health and Wellbeing; Science and Engineering and Social Sciences are designed for international students (or for students for whom English is not their first language). This route will suit students whose qualifications fall below the entry requirements to undergraduate study and/or those whose English language level does not meet the minimum criteria. The 4 year integrated IFY courses prepare students in academic subjects, English language and study skills enabling progression onto most undergraduate degree courses at the University of Wolverhampton, subject to professional body requirements. The IFY is delivered at both of our Telford and City campuses. Entry to these foundation programmes may require you to have studied specific subjects at high school.

Students from Jordan wishing to pursue the International Foundation Year (IFY) at the University of Wolverhampton will need to obtain a Certificate of Secondary Education with an overall score of 75% with no less than 70% in each subject

Please note: you only need to take a foundation programme if your qualifications are not suitable for your chosen degree.

Undergraduate

The University considers students for undergraduate study who have completed Secondary School Certificates.

Postgraduate

For entry to a postgraduate degree programme (Master’s) at the University of Wolverhampton, students typically need to have completed a three or four-year undergraduate degree (Honours Bachelor degree or Professional degree) at an accredited university or college. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the institution you have studied at.

English Program Requirements

You can demonstrate your English language ability by studying with us on our online Pre-sessional English and Academic Skills courses which will allow you to gain entry to most undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses. You can do our online Pre-sessional course from your own home - you do not need to be on our campus in order to study but you will need access to a PC or laptop and a good quality internet connection in order to fully participate. Our new online Pre-sessional courses will help you to improve and develop your English language and academic skills and will prepare you for your degree programme at the University of Wolverhampton.

Other ways of demonstrating your English language abilities are:
