Your profile
You are a creative, imaginative individual, keen to learn and excited about the idea of working alongside others in an equally creative studio environment. You may need extra time to prepare yourself for study at degree-level, or you are just not sure which area of the visual arts to pursue.
Your subject
The visual arts are all about making and doing, being imaginative and creative, inquisitive and adventurous. This can be through film, photography, design, illustration, fashion, textiles, fine art, craft-based disciplines and a host of other practices, all of which contribute to the UK’s cultural heritage, which is one of the richest in the world. All together our creative industries make a significant contribution to the economy and many are fuelled by Art and Design graduates.
Your course
This is a eight-year, part-time degree-level course in Art and Design. It is a predominantly practical course and through lectures, workshops, personal tuition and independent study provides an opportunity for students to develop the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto the first year of degree level study.
The first two years of the programme are a Foundation year which is a general introduction to art and design practice that includes modules in drawing, art history, research, study skills and workshop practices such as print, ceramics and photography. Other project-based modules in art and design provide the opportunity for you to develop your own creative direction. With tutorial support, these modules will help you decide which subject area you would like to progress onto for your degree-level studies.
The first year is a more general introduction to art and design practice, where the various modules are studied via practical workshops, a drawing programme, project work, art history, research and study skills that are aimed at providing you with the experience and knowledge you need to progress – and also to decide which subject area you would like to concentrate on in the second year.
The second year provides an opportunity for students to develop their own creative direction. During the second year you will focus on producing work in your chosen subject (for example, Fine Art, Fashion, Textiles, Design or Photography). The emphasis here, is on employing and enhancing the skills and knowledge you acquired during the first year, to develop a portfolio of work for progression onto a degree level course in that subject. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your choice of subject and your work with the relevant course leaders, who will be able to advise you on the suitability of their course for your needs.
The third year to the eight year of the programme represent a more traditional degree programme that will specialise on the chosen subject that you identify on the second year of the programme. You will undertake 60 credits a year and build up to a full level 6 Honours Degree award.
