The Bachelor of Science is built around a foundational core and 11 majors. The core subjects will help you develop a broad understanding of scientific theory, practice and technique, while your major allows you to specialise in your area of key interest. Across your first and second years, you’ll put your classroom learning into practice via hands-on scientific projects. Then, in your final year, you’ll collaborate with students from across the 11 majors, as well as with government, industrial, research or educational institutions to tackle real-world problems. This apprenticeship-style work will help you develop the competencies and expertise desired by employers, such as innovative problem-solving, critical thinking, effective communication and organisational skills, and creativity.

What if I don't meet the requirements?

If you don’t meet the English requirements for your course, you may be issued an offer of study that includes an English preparation program at the Macquarie University English Language Centre (ELC). If you receive a packaged offer, you can apply for a single student visa covering both your English preparation program and your course.

The length of your English program will depend on your current English level and the minimum English requirements for your course. Our admissions team will be able to recommend the number of weeks required when you submit your application.

What English language tests are approved?

We accept the IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT (internet-based), Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, Cambridge English Qualifications (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency), and the Occupational English Test (OET).

Assumed knowledge

HSC Mathematics Standard 2 or equivalent. If you don't have the assumed knowledge, you' re advised to include a quantitative methods elective unit in your first year of study.

Assumed knowledge

For astronomy and astrophysics, mathematics, statistical data science and applied physics majors: HSC Mathematics Advanced (Band 4), or equivalent. If you haven't met the required minimum level of achievement (Band 4 or equivalent), you can undertake an alternative introductory unit of study in that area.

Recommended studies

HSC Mathematics Advanced or equivalent, at least 2 units of science.

For astronomy and astrophysics, and applied physics majors: HSC Physics.

For mathematics major: HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E2) or HSC Mathematics Extension 2, or equivalent.
