    About

    The Bachelor of Computer Science involves the use of the most up-to-date technology and methods, and includes a major emphasis on software development.

    It is oriented towards applications in areas such as defence, aerospace and medicine, where complex software plays a major role and often of a safety-critical nature; as well as in businesses that require extensive computer support, such as banking and manufacturing.

    All our bachelor degrees include a guaranteed Work Integrated Learning opportunity, which could be a placement, internship or industry-linked project. In this degree, you'll apply your learning in six projects in professionally focused, industry-linked projects.

    One of:

    • Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification
    • completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including diplomas, advanced diplomas, associate degrees and degrees).

    Course Prerequisites

    • VCE Units 3 and 4 – a minimum study score of 25 in any English (except EAL) or 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or equivalent.
    • VCE Units 1 and 2 - satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of any Mathematics or equivalent.

    Applicants who do not meet the mathematics prerequisites for this course will be required to successfully complete Swinburne's MathsLink Further Mathematics bridging program.

    Career

    Graduates may wish to seek employment in a wide range of fields such as accounting, business analysis, commercial law, communications, entrepreneurship, event management, finance, financial planning, human resources, international business, management, marketing or public relations.

    Professional recognition

    Graduates with an Accounting or Accounting and Finance Major may be eligible to apply for membership of CPA Australia (CPAA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).

    The Finance major, in the Bachelor of Business and related double degrees, is recognised under the CFA Institute Affiliated University. The course covers at least 70% of Level 1 of the CFA program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice. This recognition signals to students, employers and the marketplace that that Swinburne's curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well suited to preparing you for employment in the finance and investment industry, and for sitting the CFA examination. Students of the Finance major may be eligible for CFA Program Student Scholarships.

    • If you do not meet the Year 12 design prerequisite a portfolio will need to be submitted for assessment (except for the Swinburne Foundation Year (Design)).
    • A Statement of Activity if there is a gap in study (for example, if you graduated secondary education in 2017 and are applying for one of our courses in 2019, we will require a written statement of what you have been doing in 2018).
