This degree is made up of 40 courses. You will do 24 courses in law and 12 courses in accounting.

Laws (Honours)

As a UniSA Law student, you'll gain valuable skills from day one, including in reasoning, reporting, analysis, negotiation, communication and advocacy. You will also experience what it's like to argue a case and provide legal advice.

Throughout your degree you will study core courses that teach you the fundamental legal concepts that underpin the Australian legal system. Courses such as torts, contracts, criminal law and constitutional law will give you a good understanding of basic legal principles.

Our Law program also features courses that build your leadership skills, intercultural communication, project management and capacity for community engagement.

You will have the opportunity to have practical learning experiences including mooting, negotiation, and witness examination. You will also engage in a community justice project, high-level research or an industry placement, ensuring you'll be prepared for legal practise upon graduation.

Accounting

You will study core courses in areas such as accounting and economic theory. These courses will give you a solid grasp of business fundamentals. You will also learn the latest in specialist areas such as:

financial and management accounting
strategic financial analysis
sustainability accounting and reporting

Through your choice of electives you can expand your knowledge in an area of professional interest such as health law, sports law, family law and human rights law.

You can gain an extra qualification and broaden your career prospects by completing a Diploma in Languages.

Corporate lawyer: ensuring the legality of commercial transactions within an organization and informing clients of their legal rights and responsibilities.
Forensic accountant: working in a corporate or regulatory environment to investigate fraud and similar crimes; researching and preparing forensic reports for courts; providing expert evidence.
In-house counsel: working closely with the chief executive of a business to understand strategic business issues, manage risk and offer tangible solutions; offering legal advice to business units.
Management accountant: assisting senior management make critical business decisions; preparing forecasts, budgets and risk analysis; advising managers about the financial implications of business decisions.
Policy adviser: analysing policies and their effects to provide advice and guidance to governments and organisations; offering strategic policy and planning advice on programs and operations; reviewing, developing, and implementing policies and strategies.
Procurement manager: implementing and managing consistent strategies for procuring, storing and distributing goods and services; monitoring business trends and product availability to ensure best prices, quality and delivery times; managing supplier relationships; overseeing a team of purchasing agents.
Project manager: ensuring projects are delivered on time and according to project plans; managing project team resources; scheduling, preparation and resource forecasting; managing vendors and suppliers; managing budgets.
Solicitor:
Commercial Solicitor: focusing on business-specific legal practice such as: corporate, contract, competition, communications, commercial property, finance, employment, intellectual property, transport, sports and media law.
Personal Solicitor: focusing on areas such as personal injury, family and tort law, criminal litigation, succession and inheritance, residential property, taxation and trusts.
Barrister: advocacy, litigation and dispute resolution, preparing matters for trial.
Tax accountant: preparing and filing corporate tax returns and maintaining records; helping organisations to run efficiently and comply with current tax laws; advising on current taxation legislation and procedures; participating in internal audit processes.
Tax lawyer: assisting and representing individuals and/or businesses with tax strategy and planning; managing and addressing reporting and compliance issues; overseeing complex business and legal relationships.

Professional accreditation and recognition

The program is accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and satisfies the educational requirements for entry into the Chartered Accountants Program.

The program is accredited by CPA Australia and satisfies the educational requirements for entry into the CPA Program.

This program covers in a comprehensive way the academic requirements for admission to practice as specified by the national Law Admissions Consultative Committee and applied in South Australia by the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council. In addition to the academic requirements of the program, students seeking admission to practice are required to complete an approved practical legal training (PLT) program. Students seeking admission to practice in other Australian jurisdictions should apply to the appropriate admitting authority.

Undergraduate – you must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 program or an equivalent program in your home country or a recognised Pathway or Foundation Studies Program. If you are an international student studying Year 12 in Australia you need to apply via the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC).

Postgraduate – At a minimum you must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree, to the required standard, from a recognised higher institution in Australian or the international equivalent and/or the equivalent professional work experience. The University offers both coursework and research degrees.
