    About

    The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is an integrated four-year program designed to satisfy the first step towards becoming a professional psychologist.

    This degree will provide you the knowledge and skills to understand and explain human behaviour and relationships. You'll learn about abnormal psychology, cognition, developmental psychology, psychological assessment, personality, social psychology and statistics, as well as biology, chemistry and physiology.

    Work Integrated Learning is a guaranteed part of all our bachelor degrees. In this degree, you'll complete an industry-linked research project as well as pre-professional training.

    The course is designed to prepare you for postgraduate studies in specialist areas of professional psychology such as counselling, clinical, organisational or sports psychology, or to pursue a career in research.

    The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is professionally accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC).

    • systematically review and critically evaluate research from a variety of sources to inform their knowledge and conceptual understandings in social and behavioural sciences, and psychology
    • formulate arguments that are fit for purpose and demonstrate an understanding of the relevant theories and evidence in behavioural studies and psychology
    • critically analyse information to generate creative solutions to solve complex problems in the area of social and behavioural sciences and psychology
    • define and integrate theoretical principles and apply these in their disciplinary areas of expertise
    • apply knowledge and skills with responsibility and accountability for their own learning and practice, individually and in collaboration with others
    • interpret and communicate ideas, problems and arguments in modes suitable to a range of audiences using a range of media
    • coherently articulate a line of reasoning demonstrating cultural sensitivity and apply a framework to analyse and offer solutions to ethical dilemmas in local and international context
    • demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge about the theories and research methods in psychology
    • analyse, consolidate, synthesise and evaluate psychology knowledge with a considerable degree of intellectual independence
    • design and conduct a coherent, substantial, independent research project and successfully execute it in a timely and self-directed manner
    • communicate and defend psychological arguments to specialist and non-specialist audiences in oral and written form
    • apply psychological theories, research principles and skills in order to problem-solve in a range of research settings and contexts

    Prerequisites

    Successful completion of one of the following:

    the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.
    completion of an approved diploma or completion or partial completion of a degree course.

    Course Prerequisites

    VCE Units 3 and 4 – a minimum study score of 25 in any English (except EAL) or 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent

    Information for applicants
    Students admitted to the course with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be eligible for academic credit and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

    Assessment for progression to the 4th year
    To be eligible for progression into the fourth year (honours year), students must achieve a minimum of a distinction average (70%) in core psychology units at the third year level. Due to limited places in the honours year the required average may be increased, however students with an average of at least 75% are guaranteed a place in fourth year. Students in this course who do not meet this standard for entry into 4th year will be eligible for the award of a Bachelor of Psychological Sciences subject to the completion of the requirements of that award.

    Graduate entry into 4th year

    Applicants from Australian universities who have completed an APAC (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council) accredited three-year sequence are eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Psychological Sciences (Honours). Students must achieve a minimum of a Distinction average (70%) in core psychology units at the third-year level and have at least credits in all second and third level core/major units (one unit exception allowed). Entry is competitive and based on academic results.

    Applicants who have completed a psychology major at an overseas university MUST provide evidence that their degree meets the requirements of an APAC accredited Australian undergraduate degree in psychology.

    The University may determine selection criteria and restrictions in respect of courses to apply in addition to these entry requirements.

    Future career options for graduates of this degree may include social welfare consultant, medical researcher, child safety officer, health officer, clinical worker and child development officer.

    Graduates seeking general registration as practicing psychologists in Australia must successfully graduate from an accredited postgraduate program, such as the Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology), Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) or Doctor of Psychology (Clinical and Forensic Psychology), or undergo a two-year supervised internship program.

    • If you do not meet the Year 12 design prerequisite a portfolio will need to be submitted for assessment (except for the Swinburne Foundation Year (Design)).
    • A Statement of Activity if there is a gap in study (for example, if you graduated secondary education in 2017 and are applying for one of our courses in 2019, we will require a written statement of what you have been doing in 2018).
