    About

    Overview

Combining studies in applied sciences and business management, this degree is designed to prepare graduates for changing roles as they progress through their scientific career and into management roles.

The first year provides a transformative learning experience, in which you'll learn and explore core science concepts across physical, life, data and mathematical science disciplines and develop and strengthen key scientific and transferable skills that will underpin your future studies and careers.

Your management degree will give you a broad knowledge base of business, and the applied science component will allow you to specialise in one of six majors, giving you the flexibility to create an individualised degree.

You will have the technical skills of a practising scientist, as well as the business skills to be an effective manager and leader: a highly attractive combination for employers.

    Why study at RMIT?

    1. You will be working with expert researchers and industry leaders in state-of-the-art facilities, allowing you to gain skills that are readily transferable to industry.
    2. In addition to studying courses from your chosen major, you can tailor your degree through electives. This gives you flexibility to combine your major field of study with a variety of other science courses.
    3. You’ll get the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to projects and practical experiences. You’ll also have access to industry-grade equipment to ensure you are job-ready when you graduate.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

    • Bachelor of Science (Applied Science)/Bachelor of Business (Management) - BP305PHYDD - Physics

    Electives and course plan

You will experience a variety of learning experiences including laboratory and practical work, fieldwork activities, formal lectures (online and face-to-face), and working with industry on self-directed projects.

Each year of your degree is designed to develop, challenge, and consolidate your knowledge.

    Years 1 and 2

In the first two years you'll develop a strong understanding of your particular area of science and business management.

Year 1 will provide you with a transformative learning experience, where you’ll learn and explore core science concepts across physical, life, data and mathematical science disciplines. You’ll also develop and strengthen key scientific and transferable skills that will underpin your future studies and careers.

You then choose a major in biological sciences, biotechnology, chemistry or physics, while also completing the required business management courses.

    Years 2 and 3

You will continue in your chosen area of science and business management.

    Year 4

You will consolidate the theory with professional projects, making sure you are on track to graduate.

Your final year of study will include a science project that may be linked to industry.

    Honours

Take your studies to the next level by applying what you have learned in a year-long research project.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 70% (see calculator below).

Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.

Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. Your application will still need to be assessed and accepted.

    Career

A double degree broadens your career options and gives you a competitive edge.

With this range of transferable proficiencies and technical skills, RMIT science graduates are highly sought after.

You may choose to enter the commercial sector, pursue a career in teaching, or opt to continue your academic career in research at a master or PhD level.

Your journey in science could lead you to become a biologist, a materials chemist, or a medical physicist, just to name a few career options.

Depending on your area of study and your interests you could end up working in:

    • analytical laboratories
    • medical and research laboratories
    • renewable energy organisations
    • chemical processing plants
    • educational institutions
    • government organisations
    • not-for-profit organisations
    • environmental consultancies.

Graduates are successful nationally and overseas. Many hold key positions in public and private industry, research organisations and government departments.

The management degree allows you to move into fields like research management, technical services management, or science business development. The diversity of successful graduates reflects the breadth of the course.
