Quantity surveyors and cost engineers provide advice to the construction industry on the financial and legal aspects of new constructions, and operation of existing buildings. They are involved in the construction process from the feasibility stage to post-completion, and they manage and administer construction costs and contracts for a variety of levels and types of construction. Tasks may include preparing cost plans and estimates, bills of quantities, tender appraisals, valuations, project audits, property taxation and life cycle cost advice.
Quantity surveyors and cost engineers work closely with other professionals including architects, financiers, project managers, engineers, contractors, suppliers, solicitors and with all levels of government.
Studies are offered in building management, cost planning and cost control, building development techniques, building research, computer software applications, measurement of construction and legal issues. There are opportunities for field trips, site visits, and practical and laboratory-based work and the flexible structure of the course allows you to choose a second major or group of minor units to match your career aspirations and personal goals and maximise employment opportunities.
