Public Health Surveillance and Applications
The course should prepare students by increasing their knowledge in:
The relationship between public health policy and public health surveillance
Characteristics and function of public health surveillance – infectious diseases, injury, chronic diseases, risk factors and behaviours, environmental
Epidemiological methods used in public health surveillance
Applications of public health surveillance – monitoring of health events, policymaking, detection of outbreaks/epidemics, preventive and control actions
The course should increase the students' skills in:
Public health surveillance data collection and quality
The analysis of trends and patterns in the occurrence of health events
Outbreak investigation
Cluster investigation
Public health programme development
Evaluation of public health programmes
Evaluation of public health surveillance systems
Public Health - Physical Activity and Nutrition
Part 1: Methods for prioritising interventions to improve population health using diet and physical activity case studies
After the course you will be able to:
Define and explain basic economic concepts, especially efficiency, opportunity costs, utility and marginal costs, and benefits
Understand the role of government in healthcare from an economic perspective
Analyse the differences between different approaches to financing health care (market-based and government-financed systems)
Understand the essential characteristics of economic evaluation and how it differs from other forms of health care evaluations
Explain the basic steps in conducting an economic evaluation of a health care intervention
Understand the need for priority setting in health
Evaluate the role, strengths, and weaknesses of economic approaches to priority setting
Apply priority setting principles to analyse selected case studies related to obesity prevention
Part 2: Scaling up and implementing physical activity and nutrition interventions
This course will increase the students' knowledge of:
Physical activity epidemiology, including health implications, current prevalence, determinants, measurement, and intervention evidence
The actors and systems responsible for physical activity promotion
Terminology, conceptual models, and study designs for implementing and scaling up interventions
Scale-up and implementation strategies, including ways to identify and address contextual barriers and facilitators
