About

the legal process operates and how law and social forces influence one another in our modern world. In this degree, youll explore the key foundations of law (constitutional law, contract law and criminal law, for instance), and examine critical perspectives on the nature of these subjects, the practice of law, and the wider role of law in society. The BCL (Law and Society) course suits analytical problem solvers who want to understand the role law plays in regulating social systems and to engage critically with the possibilities of law reform. You may choose to extend the degree from three to four years by spending an optional year studying abroad. The course also presents the opportunity to study the core modules to prepare for entrance exams to the Law Society as a trainee solicitor, or you could qualify for entrance to the Barrister-at-Law degree at King's Inns. Alternatively, upon graduation, you may choose to work within the public service, politics, NGOs, journalism, criminology/criminal justice and equality organisations, or international institutions.

Entry Requirements

Applicants presenting with GCE A Levels or the IB Diploma may be considered for direct entry into Undergraduate programmes at DCU.

Applicants who have completed an alternative qualification from this nation may be considered for direct entry into Undergraduate programmes at DCU.

English Program Requirements

In the case of all applications, evidence MUST be provided of competence in the English language. The list below indicates the minimum standards in the English language, which should be met for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in DCU.

Our BCL (Law and Society) degree gives you the foundations you need to pursue a career as a solicitor or barrister. During your degree you will have the opportunity to study core modules to prepare for the entrance exams to the Law Society as a trainee solicitor or to help you qualify for entrance to the Barrister-at-law degree at Kingâ€™s Inns.

But this degree is highly regarded by all employers and there are other paths open to you as well beyond the legal profession such as journalism, politics, public service and working for private corporations. Pre-sessional English programmes

If you have a conditional offer of a place at DCU, but don’t satisfy DCU’s English language requirements, you may be able to take a five-week or 10-week presessional English programme on the DCU campus. Once you successfully complete this programme, you can progress to your full-time DCU programme.
