    Foundation Year

    The introductory foundation yearis designed to increase your knowledge and understanding of the natural sciences, with modules on biological principles, data handling and scientific methods.

    With a focus on your progression,you will build knowledge across the breadth of the subject. You will also experience field and laboratory work, develop your study skills andlearn to manage field data

    Once you successfullycomplete and passthe foundation year, you will progress on to our fullBSc (Hons) Biological Scienceshonours degree.

    For a further three years of study - or four, if you choose to include anindustry placement, you will advance your biology knowledge and laboratory skills:

    • In year one, you will build knowledge across the breadth of the subject. Core modules focus on biodiversity, genetics, cell biology and study skills.You will also experience field and laboratory work
    • As you progress to year two, you will expand your subject knowledgeandspecialise in areassuch as human or animal physiology, parasitology and infectious diseases, and molecular genetics.
    • In your final year, you willcomplete a research project based on a subject topicof your choice. You can also shape your degree by choosing optional modules in areas such as biotechnology, antimicrobial resistance, evolution and development, and veterinary and zoonotic infectious diseases

    If you are studying part-time you select two to four modules from each year of study. This leads to a maximum eight-year duration for a part-time degree. The industry placement is not available for part-time students.

    Industry Placement

    On this course, you will have the option to take an industryplacement year between years two and three. Although you will be responsible for securing your placement, our tutors will support you in finding a role, and monitor your progress throughout.

    Industry placements are an excellent way to enhance your CV, gain hands-on work experience and build industry connections. We often find that placement students achieve higher final year grades.

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants who have successfully passed a diploma from a community college, intermediate diploma or associate degree with an overall mark of C+ or better will be considered for undergraduate entry.

    English Program Requirements

    Equivalent qualifications

    English language requirements are shown on individual course pages. Generally, this is shown as an IELTS grade, however we accept a range of equivalent qualifications. 

    As a general guide:

    For undergraduate courses we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For postgraduate courses, we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For the International Foundation Year, we require IELTS 4.5 (with a minimum 4.0 in each component) in UKVI IELTS for UKVI (Academic)

    The approved equivalent qualifications list includes the following: 

    Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) 

    University of Salford English language courses

    Regional-based qualifications

    Majority English Speaking Countries as deemed by UKVI

    Medium of English Institutions

    Applicants who require a Student Route visa to study in the UK may require evidence of a Secure English Language test rather than an examination or qualification due to visa requirements, as deemed by the UK Government Home Office, Visa and Immigration (UKVI).
