Biology and Science Education - Dual Degree

    About

The dual Biology-Science Education program at UGA combines the requirements for both the B.S. in Biology from the College of Arts and Sciences and B.S.Ed. in Science Education from the College of Education into one program.

An understanding of basic biological principles is crucial in interpreting the implications of environmental degradation, impact of genetic engineering and biotechnology, disease and forensic medicine, legal and ethical issues, and communication of that to middle and high school grades.   Students take courses in science curriculum a& learning, teaching methods, technological capability, philosophy & leadership, and others from one of four science content specializations: 1) Biology; 2) Chemistry; 3) Physics; or 4) Earth Science.  An internship provides practical learning and teaching experience.

Application to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) results in a renewable T-4 teaching certificate in the student's specialization for teaching at the secondary level which can be transferred to a majority of other U.S. states.

Graduates are provided with an excellent background for a variety of careers beyond teaching should they choose.  Many go into medicine, law, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or optometry.  Other career opportunities can be found in government, business, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental survey/control, and industries such as journalism, broadcasting, and public policy.

    How to Apply

UGA supports two different application platforms for First-Year applications. Students should only submit one of these applications. We do not prefer any particular application platform, so please select the option that works best for you and your school counselor. While we are still members of the Coalition for College, we will not be accepting applications on that platform for students applying for Fall 2023.
