    Our Biomedical Science degree provides you with the essential skills required by professional biomedical scientists at our purpose designed Science Centre.

    Our Biomedical Science students develop a huge range of practical and theoretical skills, preparing them for a future in many varied careers. There is never just one career path for Biomedical Science graduates. A degree in Biomedical Science can lead to exciting careers in health care, education, research and development, the life sciences industry, medical writing, technical sales and many other fields, as well as being an excellent spring board in to many post-graduate opportunities, including graduate medicine.

    Registered Biomedical Scientists serve at the heart of our NHS, delivering high levels of patient care and contributing to an estimated 80% of all diagnoses. It is a rapidly developing, innovating, and rewarding career path. Our Biomedical Science degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, meaning our graduates meet the educational standards required when registering as a Biomedical Scientist.

    Work placements

    All of our students will undertake 105 hours of guaranteed work placement, internship or volunteering opportunity contributing to your employability skills and preparing you for the world of work post-graduation. You will be fully supported in this process by our experienced team. Our Department works with local, regional and national employers alongside international university partners to provide students with placement and work experience opportunities both in the UK and abroad.

    When available, we will offer competitive places within NHS pathology departments that allow you to transfer on to the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science Award and complete the IBMS registration portfolio, making you eligible to apply for Health and Care Professions Council registration as a Biomedical Scientist upon graduation.

    Work placements

    You will attend a work placement between the second and final years of the course, our placement staff will work with you to identify a suitable location for your work placement. Please also note that you are responsible for any costs incurred in travelling to and from your work placement, and for any accommodation costs.

    In Year 2, you'll address the biology and diagnosis of disease and focus on practical training through clinically based modules. Youll also complete your 105 hour work placement.

    In Year 3, youll apply the practical skills youve developed to conduct your own independent piece of research. In addition you will gain more in-depth knowledge of specialisms within biomedical science.

    For those looking to study an advanced qualification, we offer an integrated Masters award in Biomedical Science. Through research methods and specialist topics, youll gain hands-on experience of advanced techniques and will be encouraged to undertake a substantial research assistantship or placement.

    Learning support

    In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning. These include study skills (such as active reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).

    Undergraduate (bachelors) degrees

    To apply for an undergraduate (bachelors) degree you need one of the following qualifications:

    • Community College Diploma / Associate Degree with a minimum grade GPA of 2.5

    English Program Requirements

    The majority of our undergraduate bachelor degree courses require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, we also accept a wide range of qualifications from around the world. The following qualifications are acceptable for most of our Bachelor degree courses.

    Careers

    Recent graduates have secured employment with the Paterson Cancer Research Laboratories and Cobra Biologics. Many of our graduates choose to work within the NHS, often beginning as Medical Laboratory Associates, with an average base pay of £20,500 (glassdoor.co.uk – Jan 2022) until they complete their portfolio after which they can apply for Biomedical Scientist roles with an average base pay of £30,000 (glassdoor.co.uk – Jan 2022).

    Many of our other Biomedical Science graduates have found employment in specialised areas such as the Blood Transfusion Service, microbiology, immunology and clinical biochemistry working in either NHS, governmental and private laboratories. Our graduates also pursue further study on research degrees or other post-graduate courses.
