Bioveterinary scientists play a vital role in the challenges facing our society:

contributing to sustainability and food security by ensuring the optimal health, welfare and management of farmed animals
applying scientific approaches to the management of the health, welfare and behaviour of domestic and captive animal populations
engaging in research at the interface of animal biology, veterinary science and animal management.

You'll gain a solid grounding in biosciences and an understanding of animal function from molecular to whole-animal level. Your studies will cover:

cell biology
biochemistry
physiology of body systems
microbiology
health, welfare, and behaviour sciences
nutritional sciences.

You will learn how to apply this knowledge in the management of animal health and welfare in a range of settings, including farms, zoos, and domestic households.

You'll also gain vital transferable skills – including team-working, problem-solving, data-handling and statistical analysis skills – which are highly regarded by employers.

Placement Year

This four-year course includes an integrated placement year between your second and final year, enabling you to gain in-depth insight into the animal or veterinary industries.

We have a dedicated placements team who can provide advice and support in finding a suitable placement, as well as developing your CV and interview skills.

You’ll benefit from our links with the animal and bioveterinary science community, including leading organisations and companies in the sector.

Past students have undertaken placements at Danisco Animal Nutrition (DuPont), Paignton, Chester and Jersey Zoos, and the RSPCA.

Our typical offers are expressed in terms of A level, BTEC and International Baccalaureate requirements. However, we also accept many other qualifications.

Acceptable science subjects include: Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, Statistics, Psychology, Geography, Environmental Science/Studies, Applied Science, Geology, Computer Science, IT.

International Baccalaureate

30 points overall, including 5 in higher level Biology and another science subject

BTEC Extended Diploma

DDM (modules taken must be comparable to A level subjects specified).

Extended Project Qualification

In recognition of the excellent preparation that the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) provides to students for University study, we can now include achievement in the EPQ as part of a formal offer.

Career

Your BSc Bioveterinary Sciences with Placement Year degree will provide numerical, laboratory, scientific and research skills that offer a route into any animal-based career, whether in industry, research or education.

You could enter scientific, technical and management positions in the agriculture, food and veterinary sectors. Opportunities are also available in animal health, nutrition or welfare, as well as in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

Alternatively, you could use your degree as a stepping stone to a further bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine or veterinary science, or a postgraduate programme in a specialist aspect of bioveterinary science.

How to Apply

You can apply online for all of our courses, including courses with an Integrated Foundation Year, via the national admissions service, UCAS. You can choose to apply for up to five courses in total, including more than one course at the same institution.

2. Begin your application

Our UCAS code is R12. The University does not have a campus code.

3. Write your personal statement

As part of your application, you'll be asked to submit a personal statement to support your application. This is your opportunity to tell us more about why you want to study the course and what interests, skills and experience you have that demonstrate your passion for the subject.

4. Submit your application

When you're happy with your application and have added the required information such as qualifications, personal statement and reference, you can submit your application.

A small charge is made by UCAS for applying to university. The application fee for 2024 entry is £27.50 for up to five choices.

Make sure to check the UCAS website for the most up-to-date application deadlines. If you have missed the January deadline, there is still the opportunity to apply (via UCAS), and we are happy to consider late applications until 30 June 2024 (all applications received after 30 June are entered into Clearing). Please be aware that some of our courses may be full after the January UCAS deadline, so we recommend early applications where possible.
