    About

    Prepare for a career in the fast-paced industries of investment banking, asset management, corporate finance or general accounting – and gain valuable real-world experience – with our BSc Finance (Investments) with Placement Year degree.

    Recent changes in finance – including the emergence of financial technology and the focus on sustainability – have necessitated changes throughout the industry.

    This four-year courses develops the key skills and knowledge to meet these changes head-on, as you gain a deep understanding of finance and the financial services industry. An integrated Placement Year provides a fantastic opportunity to put your skills into practice in preparation for your future career.

    Experts from Henley Business School will introduce you to the:

    • fundamental principles of accounting, finance and economics
    • quantitative techniques of finance
    • role of finance in business and society
    • ethics required to work in the finance industry.

    As your studies progress, you’ll gain deeper knowledge of the core concepts in:

    After the first year of your BSc Finance (Investments) with Placement Year degree, you will have the option to transfer to any of our other specialist pathways:

    Each pathway is designed to help you understand particular challenges within finance and how to respond to them.

    If you choose to remain on the general degree course, you’ll still be offered a wide range of options in your second and final years – allowing you to tailor your learning to your individual interests.

    We also offer two other variations of this course: BSc Finance (Investments), a three-year course without a Placement Year; and BSc Finance (Investments) with Study Year Abroad, a four-year course with a year studying overseas instead of on placement.

    Put your understanding of financial systems and capital markets into practice in our state-of-the-art dealing rooms, featuring computer trading simulations and financial modelling.

    You’ll experience the thrill of a live market – take positions, quote two-way prices, and manage the risk of a $50-100m trading book. This is an excellent learning opportunity, offering you highly valuable practice experience to draw upon when applying for graduate roles.

    Placement Year in industry

    In your third year, you'll have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a real-world setting with our Work Placement module.

    Entry Requirements

    Select Reading as your firm choice on UCAS and we'll guarantee you a place even if you don't quite meet your offer. For details, see our firm choice scheme.

    Our typical offers are expressed in terms of A level, BTEC and International Baccalaureate requirements. However, we also accept many other qualifications.

    Typical offer

    ABB with B in A/AS-level Mathematics OR A-level Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Statistics.

    Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ)

    If you are taking an EPQ, you will receive two offers: our standard offer and an alternative offer of BBB in your A-level subjects on the condition that you achieve a B in your EPQ.

    International Baccalaureate

    32 points overall including minimum 5 in Maths and 4 in English at standard level.

    GCSE

    4 in GCSE English and 6 in GCSE Mathematics if not done at A/AS level.

    BTEC Extended Diploma

    Not accepted unless studied alongside A level or AS level Maths (the BTEC Extended Diploma cannot be accepted on its own to cover the Maths subject requirement).

    International Foundation Programme

    If you are an international or EU student and do not meet the requirements for direct entry to your chosen degree you can join the University of Reading’s International Foundation Programme. Successful completion of this 1 year programme guarantees you a place on your chosen undergraduate degree. English language requirements start as low as IELTS 4.5 depending on progression degree and start date.

    Pre-sessional English language programme

    If you need to improve your English language score you can take a pre-sessional English course prior to entry onto your degree.

    You can apply online for all of our courses, including courses with an Integrated Foundation Year, via the national admissions service, UCAS. You can choose to apply for up to five courses in total, including more than one course at the same institution.

    1. Find a course

    Browse our undergraduate courses and identify which ones you'd like to apply for. Make sure to check your course's entry requirements before you apply. 

    2. Begin your application

    Register at UCAS and complete the application pages online, using the UCAS codes on our course pages. 

    Our UCAS code is R12. The University does not have a campus code. 

    3. Write your personal statement

    As part of your application, you'll be asked to submit a personal statement to support your application. This is your opportunity to tell us more about why you want to study the course and what interests, skills and experience you have that demonstrate your passion for the subject.

    4. Submit your application

    When you're happy with your application and have added the required information such as qualifications, personal statement and reference, you can submit your application. 

    A small charge is made by UCAS for applying to university. The application fee for 2024 entry is £27.50 for up to five choices.

    Make sure to check the UCAS website for the most up-to-date application deadlinesIf you have missed the January deadline, there is still the opportunity to apply (via UCAS), and we are happy to consider late applications until 30 June 2024 (all applications received after 30 June are entered into Clearing). Please be aware that some of our courses may be full after the January UCAS deadline, so we recommend early applications where possible.
