    About

    Quantity surveyors understand all aspects of construction, are in high demand and earn attractive salaries. They are the financial managers of the construction industry and need to manage costs effectively whilst considering quality, sustainability and the needs of the client. Throughout the lifetime of a construction project, quantity surveyors are heavily involved. This includes all stages of the design, construction and operation of property developments, including residential, commercial, industrial and retail, as well as infrastructure projects such as roads, railways and airports. By the time you graduate from the Quantity Surveying degree, you will have the skills and qualifications for a rewarding and well-paid career. On this course you will gain the skills to manage the range of tasks involved in a construction project, learning to develop commercial acumen, think independently, and practice sought after quantity surveying skills such as measurement. You'll be prepared to confidently tackle the social, economic, and technical issues associated with construction projects of all sizes. With employability built-in throughout, the course aligns with the requirements of professional bodies including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS, ensuring you are able to excel as a USW graduate. Studying this RICS-accredited Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management degree, you will learn skills and competencies that are directly relevant to industry practice and standards. Our quantity surveying graduates are widely respected. They work in all sectors of construction from housing to major infrastructure projects throughout the UK and internationally. This course is also available through Network75, a combined work and study route.

    The Quantity Surveyor is the financial and contractual expert of the Built Environment. On this course you will undertake measurement from drawings and feel confident producing quantities in order to effectively undertake the financial management of projects. You will develop an understanding of contractual obligations, the procurement process and dispute resolution.

    Your studies will cover industrial initiatives such as lifecycle costing, strategic partnering and collaboration, target cost contracts, dispute resolution and open-book accounting. To help you work towards continuous professional development, you will also learn how to apply critical thinking to your experiences. Our Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course also includes projects delivered in partnership with employers and involves real-life case studies, which will help you develop key skills for the workplace.

    Teaching

    Full-time students spend 12-15 hours each week in lectures, seminars and tutorials, usually over two to three full days. You will spend time working on presentations, assignments, reading and problem-solving exercises.

    Our Quantity Surverying and Commercial Management course wont confine you to a classroom. We dont believe you can learn vital skills like analytical decision making and problem solving by just reading about them. Thats why we offer practical activities that help you understand and apply the theory you learn in lectures. Plus youll have the chance to go on site visits to local companies.

    Assessment

    Assessment is through a mixture of coursework and examinations.

    GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances.

You could work in private practice, property departments, construction and development companies, or with government organisations. You will also have the technical, legal, economic and management skills for a career managing finance in construction projects.
