    Business Economics

    About

Combine economics with a focus on how today's business managers make decisions.

You will learn to apply the concepts and analytical tools of economics to a diverse range of real-world problems, while learning to construct arguments and effectively communicate to a wide range of audiences.

The ability to understand and assess the impact of public policy on industry and society, as well as diverse business issues such as digitisation and technological change, the development of market economies, social inequality, and Brexit, ensures you will have the skills and knowledge that are attractive to a range of employers across both public and private sectors.

Plus, you'll have even more opportunities than ever before to make connections with like-minded entrepreneurs, organisations and corporate partners in our recently enhanced Business Lounge. And you'll have access to the Business School's industry-standard facilities like the Bloomberg and Executive Education suites. Or you could help SMEs with their challenges via our Business Clinic, and take part in live business projects. Studying at Hull University Business School gives you a unique learning experience and places you as part of an exclusive club.

In your final year, you will also have the chance to spend three months on an internship. This is in addition to the extra option of studying abroad or spending a year on placement in industry.

Designed for students who want to combine economics with a focus on how today's business managers make decisions.

    What you'll study

The course consists of 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits, meaning you'll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more (e.g. 40 credits). In these cases, you'll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120.

    First year modules

    • Compulsory

      Introduction to Economics

This introduction covers both microeconomics (the affairs of individual consumers, firms and government) and macroeconomics (the study of the economy as a whole).

      Developing Self & Others

Assessing your human skills and developing good habits is central to your professional development. This module allows you to gain a better understanding of what is needed from the wider business perspective and apply theories of positive habit development in practice.

      Accounting and Finance

Delve into topics such as financing decisions, cost behaviour, cost-volume-profit analysis, absorption costing, variance analysis and budgeting.

The Economy, Society and Public Policy

This module will empower you with an understanding of pressing social problems from the perspective of an economist.

      World Economy

Study the changing world economy, developing insights into issues related to international trade, international finance, regional groupings and climate change.

      Quantitative Methods for Economics

This module will equip you with the mathematical and statistical tools you will require later in your degree.

    Second year modules

    • Compulsory

Microeconomics in Context: Learning Through Games and Simulations

Discover microeconomics: You'll use games and simulations to understand the behaviour and interactions of individuals, businesses and the government.

      Responsible Business in Society

The influence large organisations have to both postively contribute to, or potentially harm society, can be greater than the power of states. You'll reflect on challenges to business practice looking at issues such as corporate social responsibility, globalisation, sustainable development and climate change, and human rights and exploitation.

Computing Skills and Data Analysis for Economics

You'll learn a valuable range of data-handling, software and statistical skills that are relevant for obtaining, processing and presenting economic and business data.

      Macroeconomics: Managing the Economy

You'll learn the ways that government policy affects the course of the economy through its influence on the rate of inflation, economic growth, and the level of employment.

Developing a Research Tool Kit for Economists

Prepare and complete a small action research project. It's hands-on learning about research methodology, data analysis and formulating research questions.

The Digital Economy and the Business Environment

Gain the skills to operate successfully in the new economy. You'll understand and appreciate the impact of conducting business electronically.

    Year abroad modules

Spend a year studying at one of our partner institutions in Europe, Asia, North America or Australia. This is an outstanding opportunity to broaden your horizons in a different culture and environment, learn new skills and develop valuable international contacts while continuing your studies.

    Placement year modules

Your placement is your opportunity to get some real-world work experience under your belt.

Just like in the real world, you'll be responsible for finding and applying for opportunities, with the added benefit of help and support from university services.

The Centre for Professional Success is a dedicated team within the faculty who provide tailored support to students who are seeking a placement or internship.   You'll also benefit from the University's Careers and Employability service based in Student Central.

    How to Apply

For the majority of our undergraduate courses, you’ll need to apply through UCAS. As well as providing your personal details, academic qualifications and any employment history – it’s a great way to showcase your skills, qualities and passion for the subject you’re wanting to study.

You don’t need to complete your application all at once – after you’ve registered with UCAS, you can save your progress and sign back in at any time.

Use our institution code H72, and for medicine (HYMS) use H75.

    When to apply

Please apply through UCAS. We encourage applications by the January UCAS deadline, but will normally consider later applications for most courses. However, please be aware that Midwifery and Children's Nursing may close at that time.

For Medicine, applications must reach UCAS by 15 October of the year before the course starts.

To guarantee entry to the University, you must have met all the conditions of your offer by 31 August.

    UCAS Extra

If you have used all five of your UCAS choices and not received any offers, UCAS Extra allows you to make one additional choice*. UCAS Extra is available from late February until 30 June. Please check the UCAS website for up to date information, including which programmes are available.

*It is unlikely that you will get an offer by reapplying to the same department through UCAS Extra.
