– language analysis and awareness
– language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing

Teaching practice and feedback, supervised lesson planning, observation of experienced teachers and a few input sessions take place face-to-face at the University.
CELTA is validated by Cambridge Assessment English and is a highly respected and recognised qualification across the world. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland it is accredited by Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework.
The course runs 7 January - 25 March 2023
Attendance at the University is required on Saturdays only from 9.30am - 4.00pm for teaching practice and feedback, supervised lesson planning, observation of experienced teachers and one input session. Full attendance is required for the whole course.
The CELTA focuses on five main areas:
- learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
- language analysis and awareness
- language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- planning and resources for different contexts
- developing teaching skills and professionalism.
Part of the course requires you to complete teaching practice. You teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. You are assessed on your overall performance at the end of the six hours.
You also observe other English language teachers, who teach on English language courses at the University.
You are assessed on your overall performance at the end of the six hours of teaching practice with classes at two different language levels, and completion of four written assignments that focus on:
- analysing and responding to learner needs
- analysing language for teaching purposes
- teaching language skills
- reflecting on classroom teaching.
An external assessor, appointed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, moderates each course. To be awarded the CELTA certificate, you need to pass the teaching practice component and three out of four written assignments. There are four grades: Pass A, Pass B, Pass and Fail..
