The Chemical Engineering education in Istanbul Technical University was initiated in Maçka Technical School in 1958 as a four-year programme issuing undergraduate degrees. The Faculty of Chemistry was founded in 1963 and between the years of 1963-1969, a five-years programme issuing graduate degrees (equivalent to an MSc degree) in Chemical Engineering was pursued. During this period, a separate doctorate programme was carried out. A transition to separate undergraduate and graduate programmes of four and two years, respectively, was realized in 1969. The doctorate programme was pursued in the same manner. In 1982, when a new regulation came into force by the establishment of the Council of Higher Education, the Faculty of Chemistry was restructured to form the Department of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering.
The Chemical Engineering Graduate Programme has been pursued in the same manner after this date, too, and more than 600 students have graduated from this programme since its initiation.
The objective of the Chemical Engineering Graduate Programme is to provide the society with well-trained scientists, academicians and professionals that can meet the demands of today and the future. This aim is accomplished by the help of the scientific environment provided to the students, the thesis studies performed and the courses given in an advanced level. The Chemical Engineering Graduate Programme is carried out by 26 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer, 14 Teaching and Research Assistants, 1 Expert, 2 Technicians and 2 Administrative Staff in the Chemical Engineering Department. In the academic year 2010-2011, 86 and 32 students were enrolled in the MSc and PhD Programmes, respectively.
