Civil Engineering and Mathematics (Q-Master, teacher training) (M.Ed.)

    About

The lateral entry masters program in Civil Engineering and Mathematics (Q-Master) prepares you to teach these subjects at vocational schools. It allows individuals who have studied civil engineering or a similar subject at a university or university of applied sciences to pursue a lateral entry Masters of Education without having to complete a bachelors degree with teacher training first.

The curriculum of this master's program is focused on education and technical teaching methodology. In the technical component of this program with math as a secondary subject, you will further your fundamental understanding of math in engineering and acquire additional technical skills and knowledge.

During your studies you will learn fundamental professional skills required of teachers at vocational schools. Under guidance, you will be able to plan, teach and reflect upon lessons in a way that is appropriate for the target group, while gaining an understanding of extra-curricular requirements for teachers. You will be able to combine theories and concepts of scientific disciplines, teaching methodology, educational science, and language acquisition/German as a second language and draw upon these for the diagnosis of learning conditions, designing teaching-learning opportunities and for assessing learning outcomes in concrete practical teaching contexts. You will consider different aspects of diversity (including migration, gender, disability, sexual orientation) and strategies for dealing with heterogeneity. You will also be able to apply central principles of learning through research to practical contexts in schools and reflect on your competences and develop these as needed. Upon completion of your degree, you will be equipped with advanced social and communication skills and self-competence as well as advanced skills in the field of gender and diversity. As a graduate you will be familiar with the principles of scientific work and be able to communicate with different actors in the context of school and education.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Admission to every masters program at TU Berlin requires a university degree. The admissions requirement for the lateral entry masters program in Civil Engineering and Mathematics is a first university degree with at least 180 credit points. At least 120 credit points must have been dedicated to technical content within the subject profile of vocational civil engineering in accordance with the “Joint Federal State Requirements for Technical Science and Teaching in Teacher Education” (Resolution of the Kultusministerkonferenz from 16.10.2008 in the most recent version).

To be admitted to the lateral entry masters program, applicants must possess the technical knowledge required in math as a secondary subject. If you do not possess this knowledge at the beginning of your studies, you have the opportunity to acquire it during your master's studies and provide proof thereof by the time you register your master's thesis. This must amount to 20 credit points. The skills must be equivalent to the learning outcomes and content of the TU Berlin modules “Analysis I and Linear Algebra for Engineering” and “Analysis II for Engineering”.

When you begin your studies, the responsible Examination Board will use the documents you provided to determine whether your previous academic work in mathematics meets the qualification needed for admission. If this is not the case, you will be required to complete additional coursework and credit points in addition to the 120 LP already in the curriculum.

This master's program is taught in German. If you are applying with a foreign school-leaving certificate, you must provide proof of German skills at a specific level. This is a prerequisite for admission.

This masters program addresses complex interdisciplinary issues. You should possess an interest in and understanding of teaching methodology, education, and mathematics. It is advantageous to be independent as well as a self-starter as you will often work autonomously.
