    About

    People versus elites, minority rights, sexual diversity and gender politics, empire and multiculturalism, ethnicity and race, religious identity and experience, consensus and conflict, art, philosophy, the meaning of justice. You will explore vital contemporary issues as you learn about some of the most celebrated and debated cultures of ancient Europe, Asia, and North Africa. With no compulsory modules, youre free to shape your degree to suit your own interests with our broad and fully flexible structure. Whether youre interested in literature, philosophy, history, global and social issues, politics, art, culture or languages, youll be able to choose what fascinates you. Study all aspects of Greece and Rome, Persia, Egypt, the Near East and North Africa and the influence of Greece and Rome on later history and culture, including the contemporary world.The Classics and the Ancient World is degree is a three-year course that comprises of modules totalling 360 credits. Each year, you will take modules totalling 120 credits; and with no required modules, this is an unusually flexible course that you can tailor to reflect your particular interests. The Kings Greek Play has been an annual tradition since 1953 and it is the only production in the country to be performed every year in the original Greek. Students (with all levels of Greek) participate in the direction, production and performance of the play, bringing to the stage playwrights from Aeschylus to Aristophanes. In 2013 the Department of Classics created the Rumble Fund following a generous donation by a former student. This fund is used each year to pay for a group of students to visit classical lands as part of their degree programme. Classics Society Students run the Classics Society, which publishes the Satyrica newsletter and organizes regular lectures, theatre outings, themed parties, private tours around museums, nights out and trips abroad – in recent years, group expeditions have been made to Italy and Turkey. The department also promotes teaching Latin in disadvantaged primary schools through the Iris Project; this offers students a highly unusual experience that is both enriching and will impress future employers. Our students also have opportunities to attend the annual summer schools at the British Schools in Athens and Rome, and participate in archaeological excavations in Greece and Italy, as well as further afield.

    Entry Requirements

    Certificate of General Secondary Education will not be considered for direct entry - study our International Foundation Programme instead. Please note: students completing King's International Foundation programme will not be able to progress onto our Dentistry programmes.
