    Climate Change and Health

    About

    This online course aims to provide you with knowledge and critical understanding of the effects of global climate change on human health and the impact of these changes on livelihoods. You will also explore options for mitigation and adaptation. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the World in the 21st century and this module will look at its wider impact on lives and livelihoods across all continents. You will explore the economic, political, social and environmental determinants of vulnerability to the effects of climate change and will be encouraged to examine critically, the key strategies of adaptation and mitigation. Taking a student-centred and problem-solving approach to facilitate deep learning, core information will be presented through several online platforms including recorded lectures, threaded discussion boards, chat rooms and this will be expanded through case studies, group work and online seminars and group discussions. You will benefit from a learning environment that is embedded in LSTM global health research

    Topics will include:

    • Introduction to climate change;
    • climate change and human health;
    • the one health agenda;
    • managing environmental hazards;
    • global guidelines and legal frameworks such as the WHO’s IHR commitment for delivery - the recent landmark UN agreements of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction,
    • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
    • COP21’s Paris Climate Conference,
    • World Humanitarian Summit and Habitat III;
    • collaboration and team working;

    20 Academic Credits - Assessments

    Please see attached specification for assessment information. Assessments are optional but advise all students to take the assessments to cement their learning and to earn highly transferrable credits.

    For an additional fee of £95, you can be entered for full Academic Credits for this course (Masters level credit). The academic credits are offered to provide choice and flexibility to all of our students and students who do not wish to do the assessments will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.     70% Written Assessment - Identify a current/potential threat to human health due to global climate change. Critically review determinants of vulnerability to the threat; critically appraise global frameworks/adaptation strategies to reduce the health impacts of this threat.

    15% Group Presentation - based on a case study of how global climate change is affecting a specific humanitarian emergency.80% of the mark will be based on the group work and 20% on your individual contribution.

    5% Reflection - Reflection of your personal journey during the module.
