    Communication Studies

    About

    Communication studies is the study of the process of human communication.The field is broad because communication can be both verbal or non-verbal, and it is critical in a variety of settings. Communication can be interpersonal, mediated and intercultural. It can happen in public or private contexts.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    1. Graduation from a recognized high school or the equivalent.
      1. A recognized high school is
        1. Accredited by a regional accrediting association or state university
        2. Recognized or accredited by a state department of public instruction or its equivalent
      2. An applicant who has not graduated from a recognized high school must provide evidence of satisfactory completion of the requirements for a high school equivalency certificate or a diploma from a recognized high school, school system, or state department of public instruction based on the GED examination, the Wisconsin High School Equivalency Diploma, or other established criteria. Applicants from alternative educational backgrounds, including home-schooled students, should contact the Admissions Office for specific information. Additional documents, testing, and a personal interview may be required.
    2. Completion of the following 17 high school credits is minimal preparation and is required for admission consideration. Applicants are strongly recommended to take advanced courses beyond the required 17 high school credits. Students admitted on the basis of a high school equivalency diploma are considered to have fulfilled these minimum subject matter requirements.
      1. Four credits of English.
      2. Three credits of mathematics, specifically algebra, advanced algebra, and geometry.
      3. Three credits of natural science with two credits from biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, or advanced courses in these disciplines. (Integrated Science I and II courses will be counted on a one-for-one basis.)
      4. Three credits of social science (i.e., anthropology, economics, history [U.S. or world], political science [civics/government], psychology, or sociology).
      5. Four academic credits from the above and/or in the fine arts, computer science, foreign language, or other academic areas.

      *Undergraduate applicants who cannot meet the English proficiency requirement may be considered for conditional admission.  Students who are conditionally admitted will begin their studies in the UWL English as a Second Language program.

    Career

  • Interpersonal Communication: Learn about how our daily interactions with others in one-on-one and small group communication impact our identities and relationships. Coursework focuses on theories and skills to ensure students' personal and professional relationships are successful as well as socially just. 
  • Media Studies: Gain skills in multimedia production; analyze media industries, texts, audiences, and technology from different perspectives and theories; and learn how to work within a media culture that intersects with history, politics, and economics. Media studies graduates have been successful in earning master's degrees as well as working in various media-related fields.
  • Organizational and Professional Communication: Receive intensive training in the types of communication that are essential in business, industry, and organizations of all kinds. Courses in this emphasis relate to the fundamentals of effective professional communication and focus on such topics as interviewing, leadership, communication in the health professions, and organizational communication.
  • Public Communication and Advocacy: Focus on communication as a tool for civic engagement and social change in our local, regional, national and international communities. Many students who choose this emphasis are interested in careers in public advocacy, law, government, politics or civic engagement more broadly. This emphasis gives students the opportunity to build on their ability to construct and examine public communication messages in order to ensure a more just world.

    • $25 Application Fee: Payable with a credit card at the same time you submit an online application.
    • Academic Records: Official, certified, or attested transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary institutions attended. Documents issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.                                       
    • English Language Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English proficiency in order to be considered for admission. This can be demonstrated by:
