    Foundation Year

    The foundation year pathway is designed to help you to build solid knowledge and skills, so you are ready to progress on to one of our industry-accredited computing degree courses.

    Along with introducing you to essential study skills, you willexplore how to navigate complex computer systems, apply mathematics and learn to describe how things work. You will also have the opportunity to use some exciting tech, such as beacons and robot arms.

    On successful completion of the foundation year, you will progress to the first year of the full BSc (Hons) Computer Networksundergraduate degree course.

    BSc (Hons) Degree

    Delivered from our exciting MediaCityUKcampus, our BSc Computer Networks degree provides you with a systematic understanding of networks, includingthe underlying principles of how they work, and how these principles are applied in industry:

    • In year one, you'll study a range of topics in six modules covering theory and practice. Modules include an introduction to computers and network systems, Python and Linux, and database systems
    • As you progress into year two, you will follow specialist modules in network penetration testing, routing and switching, mobile networking and network simulation. You'll also experience a group design project. At the end of year two, you can choose to startyour industryplacement
    • In your final year, you will continue to progress as you focusonInternet of Things (IoT), the WANand information security. You will also demonstrate your subject knowledgeby completing your final year project

    Learning Experience

    As an approved Network Academy Centre, we deliver Cisco professional Cisco Certified Network Associate course materials alongside and within our Computer Networks course. This provides you with the opportunity to become CCNA certified.

    Industry Placement

    On the full degree course, you will have the option to take an industryplacement year between years two and three. Although you will be responsible for securing your own placement, we will support your search andassign you a tutor to monitor your progress whilst on placement.

    By successfully completing a placement year, you can add 'with professional experience' to your final degree award. Recent course students have developed their skills at placements with General Electric, Fujitsu, Cadburys and Bosch.

  • Develop a systematic understanding of computer networks, including penetration, testing, routing and switching
  • Build knowledge in Cloud services, IoT, the WAN and the facilitation of converging technology
  • Choose to include an industry placement where you can apply your knowledge and build additional transferable skills
  • Develop the technical skills and confidence ready to progress to the computer networks undergraduate degree
  • Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Applicants who have successfully passed a diploma from a community college, intermediate diploma or associate degree with an overall mark of C+ or better will be considered for undergraduate entry.

    English Program Requirements

    Equivalent qualifications

    English language requirements are shown on individual course pages. Generally, this is shown as an IELTS grade, however we accept a range of equivalent qualifications. 

    As a general guide:

    For undergraduate courses we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For postgraduate courses, we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For the International Foundation Year, we require IELTS 4.5 (with a minimum 4.0 in each component) in UKVI IELTS for UKVI (Academic)

    The approved equivalent qualifications list includes the following: 

    Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) 

    University of Salford English language courses

    Regional-based qualifications

    Majority English Speaking Countries as deemed by UKVI

    Medium of English Institutions

    Applicants who require a Student Route visa to study in the UK may require evidence of a Secure English Language test rather than an examination or qualification due to visa requirements, as deemed by the UK Government Home Office, Visa and Immigration (UKVI).
