    About

A dynamic combination of creativity and technical knowledge, computer science is a highly valued commodity in today's job market. The Tandy School of Computer Science at The University of Tulsa provides students with classroom experiences and research opportunities that lead to exciting careers in cybertechnology, computer gaming or information security as well as graduate studies.

The bachelor of science degree in computer science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.

Job placement is successful for more than 90 percent of computer science and information technology alumni within six months of graduation. Graduates accept positions at industry giants such as Google or Amazon, savvy independent startups and government security firms.

The Tandy School of Computer Science offers three programs leading to the bachelor of science degree — computer science, information technology and computer simulation and gaming. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a useful background in theory, design and applications of digital computers and information processing.

Class opportunities are also available for students interested in applying their skills through community outreach activities that share computer science and information technology with local elementary students.

Many undergraduates also minor in computer science, and double majors are becoming increasingly common. Master of science and doctoral degrees are available.

All students in computer science and information technology are introduced to the fundamental areas of computer science in the first two years of their degree: programming skills, computing ethics, data structures and comparative programming languages. Basic computer science is completed in the final two years and may include topics such as hardware and computer logic, computer graphics, theory of computation, compiler construction, operating systems, computer architecture, the design and implementation of data bases, software engineering, networks, artificial intelligence, computer security, game programming, web design, systems administration, robotics, bioinformatics and human web interfaces.

Computer Information Systems If you're a tech-savvy problem solver, then the computer information systems (CIS) field is for you. A career in CIS is quickly becoming one of the most alluring in the business world. In the age of digital information and communications, employers demand business professionals who can analyze the information needs of decision makers, design and specify systems to meet those needs and manage the computer technology requirements crucial to an organization's competitiveness. CIS experts design and build systems to help gather the information necessary to run a business and help managers make critical decisions. CIS offers opportunities to work closely with professionals in accounting, finance, management and operations. New applications of technology in the workplace will continue to drive demand for CIS professionals.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Let’s start with your grade point average (GPA). Yale admissions officers will calculate based on your high school transcript, which you’ll submit with your overall application.

Last year, the reported average high school GPA of an admitted student at Yale was a 4.19 out of 4.0, what we call a “weighted” GPA. However, unweighted GPAs are not very useful, because high schools weight GPAs differently. In truth, you need close to a 4.0 unweighted GPA to get into Yale. That means nearly straight As in every class.

Yale, like the rest of the Ivy League and most other colleges, requires either the SAT or ACT for admission. They have no preference between them, so choose the test that’s a better fit for you, thoroughly prepare for it, and plan to take it multiple times.

The average SAT and ACT composite scores for admitted students at Yale varies, as you can see in the table below. However, keep in mind that unless you fall into certain privileged categories (athletes, legacies, donors, etc.), your SAT/ACT score should be closer to the 75th percentile than the 25th percentile to ensure you’re maximizing your chances of admission.

    English Program Requirements

TOEFL or IELTS is required of most applicants whose native language is not English.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, and if you have studied in residence at that institution for at least three years, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS

No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g. M.A./M.S. or Ph.D.) from any institution.

When you complete your application, you will answer questions about your native language and the primary language of instruction at your baccalaureate institution. If either was English, you will not be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when you submit your application. No separate documentation is necessary.
