    Costume Production

    About

The unique strength of this course lies in its combination of technical focus with opportunities to experience the performance industry first-hand.

Both academically robust and creatively stimulating, the hugely diverse range of processes and media that we have on offer makes us a truly exciting place to study costume production. Interdisciplinary collaboration is actively encouraged, particularly amongst your peers in film and other media productions and as a student at Arts University Plymouth you’ll gain unrivalled access to a range of digital processes, textile printing and 3D-making.

With an overall satisfaction of 92%, BA (Hons) Costume Production & Associated Crafts also had 100% student satisfaction in the categories: “Staff have made the subject interestingâ€‌ and “My course has provided me with opportunities to apply what I have learntâ€‌

Using dedicated studio workshops you will develop costume design interpretation, pattern cutting, wearable props and tailoring. You’ll also benefit from masterclasses led by experts in specialist areas such as millinery and costume enhancement.

You’ll gain the most sought-after costume craft skills, including strong technical competence in pattern-cutting and construction for costume and accessories. You’ll learn how to cut and make costumes to industry-standard, with first-hand advice from wardrobe professionals, whilst benefiting from an enviable professional network through our links within the performance industries.

The School of Design + Communication acknowledges the rich history of design relative to industry and manufacturing, whilst embracing radical new forms of design as modes of intervention, play and transformation. By utilising new technologies, identifying emerging markets and defining more sustainable methods in their work, we bring purposeful design into everyday lives to solve the most urgent issues we face as a community and society.

Our unit structure applies to all of our undergraduate courses and creates a culture that promotes curiosity and creative thinking that extends beyond subject boundaries. Thematic approaches encourage an environment of free-flowing creative learning and opportunities for collaboration. Each unit will be contextualised by the subject specialism, and delivery will manifest uniquely through the specialist lens of each course.

    Entry Requirements

Although many of our students do come in with top grades and high UCAS points, these aren’t necessarily essential for entry. We typically ask for a minimum of 112 UCAS points, but we understand that talented artists, designers and makers can have a wide range of relevant strengths and skills beyond formal qualifications. We’re just as interested in exploring your portfolio and discussing your creative experiences as we are in seeing your grades.

We recognise the value of a variety of qualifications and relevant experience and welcome applications from students who have followed less traditional routes. We also accept a range of international qualifications and will look at each application individually.

    Career

Throughout your studies, you will have the opportunity to develop the key professional, transferable skills for employability in the creative industries and work in partnership with other sectors locally, nationally or internationally.

Our ambitious students have been awarded internships at prestigious institutions, including Glyndebourne, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Royal Ballet and National Theatre.

You'll learn from lecturers who have worked on West End productions for Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber, and gain insights from visiting professionals like Cathy Tate, Amanda Barrow and Jane Stuart Brown.

Amongst many other professional industry links to both theatre and film, we are on the doorstep of Theatre Royal Plymouth - the largest and most attended regional producing theatre in the UK, and the leading promoter of theatre in the South West - where students have enjoyed after show talks and backstage tours.

You'll also benefit from masterclasses led by experts in specialist areas such as prop making, millinery and costume design and visit events such as TheatreCraft, an offstage theatre careers event in London, and performances including opera, ballet, drama and musicals. In 2017 students created costumes for National Trust properties and exhibited at Destinations, London, where they met major film, theatre and television professionals and presented their work to prospective industry employers.

Our strong international connections allow our students to take a semester of study with one of our partner institutions within Europe and North America, and in turn, we welcome overseas students from those institutions to join us in our design studios, creating an exciting cultural exchange.

    Graduates become:

    • costume interpreters
    • prop makers
    • designers
    • stylists
    • buyers
    • costume supervisors
    • theatrical milliners
    • heritage professionals
    • lecturers
