    Cross-Cultural East Asian Studies

    About

    The minor in cross-cultural East Asian studies is designed for students wishing to develop a broad, multi-disciplinary understanding of the cultures of East Asia (China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan.)

    Students interested in this minor must complete a "Declaration of Major/Minor" form, which can be obtained at the One Stop or from the Asian Studies office (Wheatley, 6-037). For more information, students should consult with a faculty member in their area of interest.

    The minor has a seven-course minimum. Only one of those seven can be doubled counted towards another major or minor. Only one of the minimum seven courses may be taken pass-fail. Students must maintain a 2.0 average in the minor.

    Requirements:

    • Seven course minimum
    • Only one of these seven courses can be double-counted towards another major or minor.
    • Only one of the minimum seven courses may be taken pass-fail.
    • Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to enroll in the minor, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 across all courses counting toward the minor.
    • No more than two 100-level courses, including one of the following introductory courses:
      •   Asian/Hist 160L East Asian Civilizations I
      •   Asian/Hist 161L East Asian Civilizations II
    • At least two courses must be at or above the 300-level or above.
    • Six non-language electives in East Asian studies

    *Completion of two semesters of study in a single East Asian language can count as one of the six elective courses required in this minor.

    Requirements for students wanting to count language courses toward this cross-cultural minor will be:

    • One introductory course
    • Two language courses in a single East Asian language
    • Five other non-language electives

    • An official high school record, leaving certificate and/or graduation examination results or their notarized copies. All documents in foreign languages must be translated by a certified professional. Records must be sent directly from the institution to be considered official.
    • Academic recommendation letter (from a school-based counselor and/or teacher)
    • 500-word essay
    • Test scores
