    About

    Program details

The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry offers a Bachelor of Science in Dentistry degree as an option to students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine program.

Expected duration: Two summer terms (each a minimum of 10 weeks)

Through active participation in a research program, students will develop both skills in applying scientific knowledge to dental practice and an interest in dental research.

The program provides an additional qualification that may facilitate entry into various advanced degree and specialty programs.

The BSc degree will be granted at the same time as the DMD for students who successfully complete the requirements for both degrees.

    Program requirements

The BSc in Dentistry program requires each student to carry out research in either the basic sciences or in a clinical area under the direction of a faculty supervisor.

Students are required to submit a written progress report at the end of the first summer term. After the second summer term and completion of research, students will make an oral presentation and submit a final report.

The program is under the supervision of the Undergraduate Research Committee.

Responsibilities of the Undergraduate Research Committee

The Committee will supervise the operation of the BSc in Dentistry program and will be responsible for:

    • Selecting and informing students who have been chosen to undertake the program
    • Ensuring that a report is completed by each student by September 1st of their first year in the program (students failing to provide a report will not be allowed to continue into the second year of the program)
    • Informing the Dean's Office about whether students have successfully completed their obligations at the end of each summer
    • Organization of the oral presentations

Selection of Students, Faculty Supervisors, and Research Projects

    • Student selection will be based on academic achievement and the interest shown by the student in research (selection will also take into consideration the stipulation of the granting agencies).
    • Faculty members wishing to participate in the program must submit research proposals to the Undergraduate Research Committee. Students applying for entrance to the program should examine these proposals and are encouraged to discuss them with the respective staff member.
    • The student and supervisor will decide on the research project and must reach a mutual agreement to pursue a course of study for two summer terms, each of 10 weeks.
    • The Committee will receive a synopsis of the proposal and may suggest changes to ensure that the proposed work is of sufficient quality or extent for the program and that the student can complete and write up the research in 20 weeks.
The Bachelor of Science in Dentistry (BSc) program provides interested dental students an opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of faculty mentors. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in research design and methodology over two summer terms during the DMD program. This program is only available to students enrolled in the DMD program.
