The Brown + RISD MADE program is an eleven-month, intensive residential masters program for those who aspire to work at the intersection of design and engineering. Our community thrives on experiential learning, working with diverse partners, expressing ideas through physical objects, and improving people's lives.
The Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) program is based in studio pedagogy, with summer, fall, winter, and spring studios. These are supplemented by elective courses in the fall and spring semesters as detailed below. Each year, we select a cohort of students from diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. About half of our students come from an applied design discipline such as product design, architecture, industrial design, UX design, graphic design, or computational art. And about half come from a technical discipline, such as mechanical engineering, systems engineering, applied math, data science, or computer science.
Additional Resources
Students benefit from the complementary strengths of the neighboring world-class institutions of RISD and Brown. Close academic ties make it easy for students to broaden their knowledge through elective coursework and access each campus' exemplary resources. The program offers opportunities to collaborate with faculty and students from diverse degree programs, providing a rich environment for growth and collaboration. The program benefits from extensive workshop spaces that provide the necessary tools and space to support the making of high fidelity prototypes.
