    Digital Health Informatics

    About

Digital health and biomedical informatics is a rapidly growing and evolving field. Not only are new positions being added to the workforce in the digital health field, but the positions themselves are changing along with the development of new information technology. For example, one of the most important and common ways that most people interact with information, including digital health information, is through mobile devices: smartphones and tablets. These mobile devices are displacing traditional desktop computers and laptops, a trend that was not apparent even five years ago.  Digital health and health informatics professionals will be needed for important roles in traditional healthcare settings such as hospitals, large academic medical centers, outpatient clinics. Digital health and health informatics professionals will also be needed in emerging digital driven companies, device manufacturers, pharmaceutical and insurance companies. Digital health and health informatics professionals will help to design and guide the implementation of new electronic medical record systems and digital health solutions. As data mining becomes more important for monitoring outcomes for procedures and medications, health informaticists will be involved with implementing data mining systems in these centers. Executive positions as Chief Information Officer and IT Directors will increasingly require candidates to have broad and deep training in health informatics and digital health. A burgeoning health technology startup community has emerged in recent years in Silicon Valley and in several global tech hubs. Innovative entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs will require people with an understanding of healthcare workflows, digital health, data privacy, and computer technology to staff their companies.

The MS in Digital Health Informatics program at the University of San Francisco is designed to give rigorous training at a graduate level to prepare students not only for health informatics and digital health positions as they exist today, but also to grow with the field and be at the forefront of this dynamic field as it evolves in the coming years. Thus, the program will give students skills and training in digital health, computer science, programming, clinical data standards, electronic health record systems, and emerging healthcare needs, and, importantly, the ability to analyze and design complex healthcare systems that grow and adapt as needed. The program is intended to prepare outstanding leaders and innovators in digital health and informatics for now and long into the future, with a focus on social justice and positive contributions to the healthcare ecosystem and community.

Graduates with a Master of Science in Digital Health Informatics are prepared to:

    • Lead the development and application of emerging information technologies to improve all aspects of health care delivery
    • Master the "language" of health care, navigate the rules around using medical data, and utilize relevant information to assess changes in the health care system
    • Utilize health information technology for decision support, knowledge management, strategic planning, and outcomes assessment
    • Effectively interface between the technology developers and the clinical user community
    • Assure that healthcare information technology advances patient information security and confidentiality and promote ethical health care decisions

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

The application process is entirely online. Please complete and/or upload all of the items listed below to your application account. There is no need to mail items to our office.

    Bachelor's Degree

A 3.0 GPA or higher in a bachelor's degree in any field is highly recommended. A general knowledge of the intellectual, social and cultural history of the Asia Pacific is required.

    Language Requirement

Two years of a university-level Asian and/or Pacific language is required for the degree. This may be satisfied before or during enrollment in the graduate program. The GRE General test score is not required.

For international applicants, an English Language exam score (TOEFL, IELTS or PTE) is required.

    Transcript (Academic Record)

Upload a copy of your transcript from each university and college attended. Please ensure the institution’s name and your name is on the document you upload. Transcripts from any schools and study abroad programs must be submitted since bachelor's degree institutions typically do not list transfer and study abroad courses with grades.
If still enrolled in your bachelor's program, submit a copy of your transcript showing in-progress courses. If admitted, an official transcript with proof of graduation is required. USF undergraduates upload their unofficial transcripts for admission review and do not need to send an official USF transcript.

    Statement of Purpose

A three-to-four page, double-spaced, typewritten document describing your personal, academic, and professional reasons for pursuing a Master’s in Asia Pacific Studies, and for choosing this program at USF. The statement should relate your relevant background and experiences to your educational and professional goals.

    Resume or CV

Your current resume or CV lists and describes your educational history, work or job history, coursework related to this graduate program, and any experiences relevant to your pursuit of graduate studies – including internships, published articles or other published materials, volunteer/community service experience, study or work outside of your home country, and any interests or activities related to this graduate program.

    Letters of Recommendation

A minimum of two recommendation letters are required for your application. Additional letters of recommendation are accepted. Follow the instructions in the online application to provide the contact information for your recommenders.

You may submit your application before your recommenders upload their letters.

Asia Pacific Studies/MBA Dual Degree Instructions

Dual degree students submit separate applications to both the Asia Pacific Studies and MBA programs. MA in Asia Pacific Studies (MAPS) students typically apply to the MAPS/MBA dual degree program near the end of their first year in the MAPS program.

    • Review MBA Application Requirements.
    • Statement of Purpose
In the statement for each application indicate your intention to apply to both programs.
