    Overview

    The Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) combines high-level research training with professional psychology skills. You will develop skills and experience in psychological assessment, diagnosis and intervention across the lifespan. Our postgraduate training has a strong emphasis on reflective practice, ethical decision making and cultural competence.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must have completed within the last 10 years:

    • An APAC-accredited four-year sequence of study in psychology with at least an upper second class Honours (H2A) or equivalent overall mark; OR
    • An APAC-accredited Master degree in Psychology; OR
    • Overseas qualifications assessed by the Australian Psychological Society as equivalent to either of the above; AND 
    • Demonstrated possession of an appropriate level of knowledge and skill related to research.
    • Demonstrable counselling experience (e.g., Lifeline, Care Ring, or similar) is preferable but not essential for entry.

    Demonstrate English proficiency with one of the following:

    English language tests are to be undertaken within two years of application and formal study in English for two years at AQF7 or above is undertaken within five years of application.

    Note: Prospective students should refer to the following website http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx for details of the standards for English language skills for registration as a practitioner in the Psychology profession on completion of the program..

    Need to undertake an English assessment for entry?

    A prerequisite for many courses, the Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) can now be done at our Hawthorn campus.

    • Certified copies of your previous academic results.
    • Certified English language proficiency test results (IELTS, PTE or TOEFL).
    • Letters from your school or employer.
    • If you do not meet the Year 12 design prerequisite a portfolio will need to be submitted for assessment (except for the Swinburne Foundation Year (Design)).
    • A Statement of Activity if there is a gap in study (for example, if you graduated secondary education in 2017 and are applying for one of our courses in 2019, we will require a written statement of what you have been doing in 2018).

    If you are applying for credit, you must include course outlines and translated (English) copies (if required) from your previous or current course.
