    MS and PhD Degrees in the field of Chemical Engineering

    Upon completing the MS and PhD degrees in the field of Chemical Engineering, students will be able to:

    1. Demonstrate a solid foundation in the fundamentals of chemical engineering in four areas: applied mathematics, kinetics and reaction engineering, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena.
    2. Apply advanced knowledge from several major areas of modern chemical engineering.
    3. Conduct independent research by working on research projects, individually and in interdisciplinary groups.
    4. Demonstrate professional written and oral communication skills.

    MS Degree Program

    MS degree is a thesis masters degree. For general university requirements, please see Thesis Master’s Degrees. regulations, and procedures for all graduate programs, please see All Graduate Students. Students pursuing MS degree in field of Chemical Engineering must:

    • Obtain permission by department to apply for program.
    • Accepted candidates must complete at least 58 credit hours, which must include:
      • 5 courses (55 credit hours) of core Chemical Engineering courses, and
      • 5 course (3 credit hours) as an Elective, taken at 500-level or above.
    • Complete at least 58 approved advanced course credit hours with high standing.
    • Submit an original research thesis.
    • Defend thesis in a public oral examination.
    • Complete a teaching requirement.

    English Program Requirements

    The English Language Proficiency Requirement may be waived for an international student who received a degree from an institution in which English is the official language of communication. Contact the admitting program for more information.

    The following language proficiency tests are accepted by Rice graduate programs and will be used to assess English language proficiency. Please note the below scores are the minimum requirement, though some program requirements will be higher.

    • The TOEFL IBT Home. A minimum score of 90 is required
    • IELTS Indicator. A minimum score of 7 is required.
    • Duolingo. A minimum score of 115 is required.
