    Dutch BA

    About

    Course overview

The Dutch BA is a four-year, single-subject programme. Each year students take a total of 120 credits. The intensive language module develops practical language skills while the cultural studies modules focus on issues of identities and communities, as well as on ways of investigating contemporary culture. Aside from core modules, you can choose options in literature, history and sociolinguistics, and focus on broad cultural movements, issues and approaches from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The programme focuses on the language, culture and history of the Netherlands and Flanders, two neighbouring countries that are among the largest trading partners of the UK. Dutch is also an official language in Suriname and to a large extent mutually intelligible with Afrikaans, one of South Africa's languages.

Students start learning Dutch from beginner level and graduate as fluent and interculturally competent speakers of this global language. Over the four years, you will deepen your knowledge of the Dutch language while also developing valuable skills in cultural literacy and critical thinking.

What this course will give you

No previous knowledge of Dutch is required, as you will receive intensive language training in the first two years if you start the subject from beginner level. You may also start the programme as a more advanced speaker of Dutch.

The Year Abroad will give you the chance to attend a university or work overseas. During this time you will finesse your language skills in your target language and gain valuable experience, which will enhance future learning as well as career prospects.

You will study in a small, friendly department. Our high staff to student ratio is unusual in higher education.

You will have access to one of the most comprehensive Dutch libraries in the English-speaking world, including our collection of Dutch and Belgian films and multimedia learning resources.

This four-year degree programme aims to develop students' interest in, and knowledge of, the Dutch world, both past and present. You will be able to choose from a wide range of modules including literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, film or other aspects of the cultures associated with the language you'll be learning.

    Career

    The foundation of your career

There is significant demand for Dutch-speaking graduates, as evidenced by the regular requests the department receives from employers. In the English-speaking context, a university graduate with a good command of Dutch is rare, giving the graduate a major and distinguishing asset.

Belgium and the Netherlands belong to the world's most advanced manufacturing and trading areas and are among Britain's largest trading partners. They house the headquarters of numerous multinational companies, the political heart of the European Union and NATO. Dutch has 23 million speakers worldwide and Afrikaans, closely related to Dutch, has 17 million.

Popular career paths for modern language graduates include teaching and education (12.3%), publishing, journalism or translation (11.8%), accountancy and financial services (11.2%), media (4.8%), law (2.7%), PR, advertising, marketing (2.1%) and the civil service (1.6%)*. Employers of our graduates include KPMG, Bloomberg, BBC, Business Insider, Deutsche Bank, Houses of Parliament, Ipsos MORI, L'Oreal, London Theatre Company, Lonely Planet, Teach First, PwC and UK Government.*

Some graduates pursue careers that make special use of their language skills, including translating, interpreting and teaching, while others continue with graduate training, further study or academic research (4.8%).*

    Employability

There are many career opportunities for UCL's modern language graduates. We seek to embed within our teaching the acquisition of transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication skills as well as linguistic and cultural knowledge.

78% of graduates from the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS) were in work, further study or due to start work or study, 15 months after graduation.*
