Economics I

About

Economics is the study of how societies allocate resources among competing uses. This includes studying how individuals do the best they can in many realms of life, how firms make decisions that affect profits, wages and work, and how governments enact policies to shape societal outcomes. Specific areas of focus include international trade, health care, international finance, taxation and public expenditure.

Internationally and nationally recognized faculty who receive prestigious research grants and publish in top-ranked journals.
Faculty include a Canada Research Chair in Public Economic Theory, the Ontario Research Chair in Health Human Resources, the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Chair in Advanced Manufacturing Policy, the LIUNA Enrico Henry Mancinelli Professor in Global Labour Issues and the Senator William McMaster Chair in Econometrics.
Excellence in research and home to three research centres: McMaster Decision Science Laboratory (McDSL), Public Economics Data Analysis Laboratory (PEDAL) and Statistics Canada Research Data Centre at McMaster (RDC).

General Requirements for Admission

6 subjects – 3 at HL and 3 at SL Plus the TOK and EE
Math SL or HL will be accepted
NEW Math equivalencies for first assessment in 2021:
- SL/HL Analysis & Approaches or HL Applications & Interpretations can be used to meet Calculus requirement
- SL/HL Analysis & Approaches or SL/HL Applications & Interpretations can be used to meet Advanced Functions requirement
- HL Analysis & Approaches or SL/HL Applications & Interpretations can be used to meet the Data Management requirement
- SL Analysis & Approaches MHF4U, MCV4U
- HL Analysis & Approaches MHF4U, MCV4U, MDM4U
- SL Applications & Interpretations MHF4U, MDM4U
- HL Applications & Interpretations MHF4U, MCV4U, MDM4U

Bonus points – TOK and EE are added to the total score for admission consideration

Advanced Credit Policy

Final IB scores (HL only) of 5 or higher may be considered for Advanced Credit at the discretion of the Faculty.
Certificate results of 5 or higher are also eligible for consideration

English Program Requirements

Applicants are required to submit evidence of their proficiency in the English language as part of their application. The most common evidence is a score on one of the following exams:

TOEFL: minimum score of 92 (internet based), 237 (computer based) or 580 (paper based), minimum of 20 per band; for the Faculty of Engineering a minimum score of 88 (internet based) or 213 on the (computer based) or 550 (paper based)
IELTS (Academic): minimum overall score of 6.5, with at least 5.5 in each section
CAEL: minimum overall score of 70, with at least 60 per band
MELAB: minimum score of 85
PTE Academic: minimum score of 63; for the Faculty of Engineering a minimum score of 70
York University course: YUELI Level 6 with a minimum final grade of B
University of Toronto course: Academic Level 60 with a minimum final grade of B
