    About

The School of Education at Westminster College offers two major programs in teacher preparation. Candidates can enroll in the Early Childhood PK-4 and Special Education PK-12 dual certification major or the Secondary Education Grades 7-12 minor. The programs offer multiple opportunities to interact with children and adolescents during the course of study. Our curriculum offers experiences that expand student's knowledge base about classroom interaction while offering comprehensive, current research-based educational theory and practices. Early Childhood and Special Education majors enter the Teaching and Learning Laboratories as cohorts. The Teaching and Learning Laboratories are designed to support and develop a variety of innovative and effective methods of teaching and learning under the guidance of a team of curriculum designers, educational experts, and instructional technology specialists. Students interested in teaching at the secondary level select a disciplinary major - biology, chemistry, mathematics, English, history, Spanish - and then take the accompanying program in secondary education as an added minor. Teacher candidates complete their capstone during four intensive months of full-time pre-service teaching mentored by a master teacher. Students undergo additional professional development, develop job hunting skills, and prepare for the Pennsylvania state-mandated certification tests and application during the Student Teaching Seminar.
