    About

    The MA Educational Leadership with a concentration in Emancipatory Leadership for Schools, offered by the Department of Educational Leadership , prepares school leaders through deep engagement with research and practice through applied consulting on living case studies. Emancipatory school leadership approaches create organizational cultures to reflect the diversity of experience and knowledge within school communities through collaborative approaches to deconstruct power systems, challenge inequitable practices and policies, and cultivate community cultural wealth.

    Admissions Requirements

    Applicants must submit a complete graduate application by applying through the CSU Cal State Apply system and meet all the university admission requirements. Applicants apply separately to the department to obtain admission into the Master of Arts degree in Emancipatory Leadership for Schools. See the GAPE Graduate Admissions website and admissions requirements  section. Applicants must submit a letter of nomination/recommendation from a school leader as part of their application. Upon review of the applications, all applicant finalists will participate in an interview by the admissions committee to finalize admission to the program. Applicants from countries in which the native language is not English must achieve a minimum English-language proficiency test score as indicated on GAPE's Graduate Program Test Requirements webpage.     Requirements for Admission to Classified Standing

    Applicants may be admitted to classified standing if they meet the admissions requirements for both the Graduate Division and the department. The minimum requirements for the program are a bachelor's degree in any discipline, 3 years of experience working with K-12 schools, and a nomination/recommendation from a school leader. Preference is given to candidates who demonstrate a commitment to emancipatory practices in education.

    1. Candidates must meet all university admissions requirements.
    2. Department application materials include the items listed below and are to be sent directly to the department office at: Department of Educational Leadership San JoseÌ State University One Washington Square, SH 219 San Jose, CA, 95192-0072
      1. Autobiographical and Professional Goals Statement (two to three pages, double-spaced) that includes the applicant's:
        1. educational background
        2. experiences demonstrating work with schools
        3. professional goals in pursuing the degree (include areas of interest in leadership)
        4. any additional information explaining interest in the Emancipatory Leadership for Schools master's degree program
      2. One nomination/recommendation from a K-12 school leader.
      3. Two letters of recommendation from current or former professors and/or employers who can testify to the applicant's ability to successfully pursue an advanced academic degree and/or discuss the applicant's experience within the proposed field of study. Forms for these letters can be found on the Department of Educational Leadership website.

    Graduation Requirements

    Complete the following requirements:

    1. PASC/CalAPA Transfer Units or Area of Specialization (12 units);
    2. Core Courses: EDLD 201 , EDLD 202 , EDLD 204 , EDLD 205 , EDLD 206 , and EDLD 253 . Students must achieve a minimum of a "C" in each course, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in all their coursework, AND a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the courses listed in the Candidacy form. At SJSU, students must pass the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) . The GWAR is satisfied with the degree requirements core course EDLD 201 ;
    3. Both culminating experiences: Applied Consulting Project and the Emancipatory Leadership as Praxis Statement.

    Entry Requirements

    • U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree from a recognized, accredited, and approved institution from a country outside of the U.S. 
    • A 2.5 institutional or college cumulative GPA (from the 0.0 - 4.0 U.S. grading scale) in the last degree completed, or a 2.5 GPA in the last two years of full time study. Please note that individual program requirements may have a higher GPA requirement. 
    • Good academic standing at the last institution attended.
    • English Language Proficiency Exam, if necessary.

    How to Apply

    Submit an online application through Cal State Apply for desired term and program to San José State University. This step must be completed regardless of any extra steps required by your specific graduate program. You may only apply to one degree program per admission term. NOTE: Admission term can be selected on the Cal State Apply landing page.

    Note: An application fee is due at the time you submit your Cal State Apply application. This fee is non-refundable, even if your application is withdrawn or denied and only used for the applied term. Fee waivers are not available at this time. 

    In order to successfully obtain an F-1 visa, you will need to correctly designate yourself as an international applicant planning to study on an F-1 or J-1 visa at the beginning of your Cal State Apply application during the “Complete Your Profile” section.

    Select 'Yes' for the question: Do you have or will you require an F-1 (student) or J-1 visa (exchange) to study the California State University (CSU)?

    If you mistakenly apply as a domestic applicant and intend to study on an international student visa for a program that is NOT currently offered to international students, your application will be withdrawn.

    NOTE: Submit your Cal State Apply application per your legal name as indicated on your passport. Discrepancies in the spelling or order of your name will result in delays in processing your application.
