Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Year 1

In Year 1, you will be introduced to the basic theory and practice of Engineering, leading to the core themes of Electronics and Electrical Engineering developed along with mathematical knowledge, engineering programming, practical workshop skills and team working.

Year 2

Core knowledge of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Mathematics is further developed alongside telecommunication, microcontroller and Management in Year 2. A group design exercise project designing and building electronic and electrical devices integrates the year’s study.

Year3

Analytical and professional skills are enhanced through signals, instrumentation and control and Project Management and Leadership in Year 3. This year’s subject areas include more specialised Electronics Engineering and other specialised areas, mechatronics, data communications and software engineering. A group project provides opportunity to enhance the project development and management capabilities.

Year 4

Additional Electives develop the specialisms along with advanced core Electronic and Electrical Engineering. A two Termmajor individual project, which may be research-related, exercises all your academic and professional skills, broadens your experiences and deepen your ability in chosen area.

Year 5

For students taking the fast-track MEng route, the final stage runs over two summers before and after Year 4 and is based on two industrial placements and block delivery of advanced Analytical and Professional Management modules.

Activity Summary

You will study four modules each Termwith the learning experience differing from module to module depending on the nature of the subject. Teaching ranges from formal lectures, supported by tutorials and laboratories to mixed mode teaching with lecture, tutorial and laboratory work running in a session. Ways of learning includes small groups of student working in a practical workshop environment to individual and group activities and projects taking place in a timetabled or open access laboratory environment.

Your course resources will be available on Campus Moodle, our virtual learning environment, where you can find course notes, tutorials, coursework assignments and much more.

Year 4

• Lectures -25 students per group,6 hours per week
• Tutorial -25 students per group, 6 hours per week
• Project Supervision - 1 student per group,1 hour per week
• Practical class or workshop - 25 students per group,3 hours per week

How long is MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering?

An Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree can be completed within 4-5 years, in which the opportunity to receive the necessary skills are obtained.

Independent Study

Where appropriate, you will have open access to laboratories for independent study and coursework preparation during the day, evenings and weekends. Most modules equate to 150 hours of study and the balance between class contact, directed study and personal study varies from module to module, with an approximately equal allocation of time to each.

Staff Delivering on This Course

Academic staff are experienced Engineers, many with Chartered status and industry links, who have achieved or are working towards Higher Education Academy Fellowship - a professional recognition of their practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning. Many are research-active and some feature in the annual STAR awards (Support and Teaching staff with Appreciation and Recognition) voted for by the students.

Engineering Applications Supervisors will take you through the more practical aspects of Engineering in our Flexible Learning Labs and Technicians and postgraduate research students will provide support for projects and laboratory work.

Assessment

Typically students are assessed each term:

• 3 Written exams, average time of exam: two and half hours
• 2 Reports
• 1 Oral Assessment
• 2 Practical Skills Assessments
• 2 Set Exercises

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of submission of coursework.

Placements

On the 4 year (fast-track) course, two 10 week optional placements are offered which may be paid or unpaid.

The University has strong contacts with industry and our Placement Office staff liaise with companies offering placements and provide support to students.The Placement Officealso work with the School of Engineering to ensure that the placement content is appropriate for the MEng course.

You are expected to be proactive and will need to apply for and be successful in placement interview.

Job Prospects

Electronic and Electrical Engineering graduates have pursued careers in the development and operation of electronic and electrical systems in automotive systems, oil and gas engineering, power generation and utilisation, marine technology, consumer equipment and complex control systems for industry, as well as a range of opportunities in the telecommunications industries.
