    BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline is a degree that is unique to the University of Salford: designed to meet the professional and social challenges of today, this innovative programme allows you to craft your own route through English by making possible the combined study of two subjects from English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, and Drama.

    As a part of BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline, you can choose to combine your academic, professional, and creative interests in the following ways:

    By studying BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline, you will develop a varied skillset through the study of two related subject areas, and you will be encouraged to explore these subjects within a department that values and celebrates the intersections between English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, and Drama. You will also become part of The Northern School of Writing at Salford, a community of students, writers and researchers bringing together students from across our artistic disciplines, working to enrich lives with literature and support independent publishers.

    There is no one ‘type’ of applicant for a degree as broad, diverse, and innovative as BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline, but have a look at the following questions to see if this might be the degree for you.

    • Do you dream of seeing your words in print? Do you love the way words create vivid images and stories that stick with readers for a lifetime?
    • Are you passionate about theatre and performance? Are you as passionate about performance as you are poetry and prose? Do you want to learn how to write compelling scripts, as well as act them out on stage?

    The innovative BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline course will allow you to choose a bespoke set of options designed to underpin both your academic interests and your future career aspirations. If you want to combine studies in any two of English Language, English Literature, Creative Writing, or Drama, then BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline is the degree for you! The world of work is increasingly looking for people with expertise and skills in a variety of areas and, although you will focus primarily on two areas, this degree will allow you to experience modules outside your main academic focus.

    There will also be opportunities to think about how your study can be applied to the real world by taking either or both of our work placement and disciplinary teaching modules.

    The BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline course is made up of the following combinations.

If we offer you a place on the course, we will invite you to confirm your chosen modules so that you will be ready to start your learning journey from day one.

    As part of your application, you’ll need to submit a personal statement and meet our entry requirements. This is a written piece (up to 4,000 characters) of your academic, professional/life experience and future goals.

    Standard entry requirements

    GCSE

    English Language at grade C/ 4 or above (or equivalent) is required. Maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is preferred but not essential.

    You must fulfil our GCSE entry requirements in addition to the Level 3 qualification requirements.

    104-112 UCAS Tariff Points.

    A level

    104-112 UCAS Tariff Points to be obtained from a minimum of two A-Levels or equivalent; must include Grade C or above in any subject. General Studies accepted.

    T level

    Merit.

    BTEC National Diploma

    DMM.

    Access to HE

    Pass Level 3 Access to HE Diploma with 104-112 UCAS Tariff Points.

    Scottish Highers

    104-112 Points.

    Irish Leaving Certificate

    104-112 Points.

    International Baccalaureate

    30-31 Points.

    European Baccalaureate

    Pass Diploma with 71% overall.

    International students

    We accept qualifications from all around the world. Find your country to see a full list of entry requirements.

    International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0, with no element below 5.5, is proof of this.

    We also accept a range of other English language qualifications. If you do not have the English language requirements, you could take our Pre-Sessional English course.

    Alternative entry requirements

    Salford Alternative Entry Scheme (SAES)

    We welcome applications from students who may not meet the stated entry criteria but who can demonstrate their ability to pursue the course successfully. Once we have received your application we will assess it and recommend it for SAES if you are an eligible candidate.

    There are two different routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme and applicants will be directed to the one appropriate for their course. Assessment will either be through a review of prior learning or through a formal test.

    Equivalent qualifications

    English language requirements are shown on individual course pages. Generally, this is shown as an IELTS grade, however we accept a range of equivalent qualifications. 

    As a general guide:

    For undergraduate courses we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For postgraduate courses, we require IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) or equivalent

    For the International Foundation Year, we require IELTS 4.5 (with a minimum 4.0 in each component) in UKVI IELTS for UKVI (Academic)

    The approved equivalent qualifications list includes the following: 

    Secure English Language Tests (SELTs)

    Majority English Speaking Countries as deemed by UKVI

    Medium of English Institutions

    Applicants who require a Student Route visa to study in the UK may require evidence of a Secure English Language test rather than an examination or qualification due to visa requirements, as deemed by the UK Government Home Office, Visa and Immigration (UKVI).

    Through the multidisciplinary approach of this degree, your selected route—which combines two discipline areas from Creative Writing, Drama, English Literature, and English Language—will equip you with a range of transferrable skills that can be applied in any professional workplace. Many of our graduates go on to become teachers, researchers and academics, or to work in the civil service, media, advertising, or any role in which communication is key. Creative Writing is the natural choice for budding authors and poets; Drama open-ups a wide range of exciting career opportunities as a practitioner in the theatre and film industries; English Literature may appeal to you if you are looking for a career in publishing; English Language could lead you to careers in speech and language therapy, lexicography, and teaching English as a second or other language.

    Furthermore, while studying BA (Hons) English Multidiscipline, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through our work placement module in an industry relevant to your career development while you are studying—and we will support you with additional opportunities for support in CV development and application writing.
