    Evidence-Based Policing

    About

    You acquire and develop recognised subject-specific knowledge and understanding, and cognitive, intellectual, practical, professional and generic key skills and qualities. You also effectively plan, manage and evaluate your own learning to become an independent life-long learner.

    Expert knowledge from both academics and practitioners in the field of policing and practice underpins your learning experience. You gain a deep theoretical knowledge of evidence-based policing and transferable skills, which will benefit your workplace impact and/or prepare you for further study. You will have opportunities to research alongside current serving police officers within the locality and the academic staff involved in the University's Policing Clinic.

    You will:
    – develop subject-specific knowledge about evidence-based policing
    – gain cognitive-intellectual, practical-professional and generic key skills
    – develop your research skills enabling you to conduct your research successfully towards more specialist fields of enquiry for your dissertation
    – appreciate complex knowledge, theory and concepts appropriate to postgraduate studies
    – plan, manage and evaluate your own learning to become an independent lifelong learner.

    The MSc Evidence-Based Policing enables policing graduates, those professionals working within the police service, or other relevant agencies, and those with degrees in another discipline, to continue professional and/or personal development by exploration of evidence-based policing.

    Core modules

    Comparative Policing

    You examine the policing systems in the UK, Europe, North America, Africa and Asia, and the law enforcement agencies in place to assist the investigation of local, regional, national and transnational policing.

    Contemporary Issues within Policing

    This module addresses many of the issues that have shaped the modern practice of policing in recent times. It traces the way in which landmark events have served to mould the daily practice of policing, and the implications that these have for police delivery.

    Evidence-Based Policing Dissertation

    You?consolidate all your learning, incorporating the development of your awareness and skills relevant to research and evaluation. You explore, in detail,?a specific aspect of policing, and integrate, synthesise and critique information gained for your research-based?dissertation.

    Evidence-Based Research and Problem Solving

    You develop critical understanding, knowledge and practical skills on how to conduct evidence-based research that informs problem-solving including the theoretical underpinnings and ethical considerations needed when designing research.

    Strategic Leadership

    You gain the requisite knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership within the policing environment, enabling you to perform effectively in professional roles.

    The course modules ensure you acquire relevant subject knowledge, develop a wide range of transferable skills, and to think about the ethical considerations relevant to all aspects of communication.

    Digital learning methods are used to enhance group work, deliver presentations and complete formative and summative assessment. You are encouraged to make use of the support, software and applications available to through Student Futures, the Digital Toolkit and training courses via the University website.

    Typically, the taught sessions are delivered through seminars, discussions and the virtual learning environment (VLE).

    You have opportunities to work alongside current and serving officers within Cleveland Police, and the academic staff involved in the University's Policing Clinic.

    Formative assessment
    Formative work/assessments are given as an aid to learning. Feedback is provided to assist you in preparation for summative assessments.

    Summative assessment
    Summative assessments refer to work that is assessed and graded which counts towards your award. You receive feedback on these assessments and you should consider how that feedback can help you with other work you complete.

    For many of the core modules and the Evidence-Based Policing Dissertation, you decide on your assessment questions after consultation and agreement with tutors. This leads to assessments focused on your area of interest and promotes autonomy and responsibility for learning. It enables you to engage with problems that employers are interested in solving.

    Our assessments help you develop essential skills to work successfully at postgraduate level, as well as for continuing professional roles and lifelong learning. Your work is assessed in a variety of ways, including:

    – research proposal
    – written assignments
    – dissertation.
