Examination of the Newborn (Degree Level (6))

    About

It is delivered completely online over 30 weeks and includes interactive classroom sessions and a variety of independent learning sources. Your independent learning is through recorded lectures and work for you to complete. You are assessed in two components; a portfolio of clinical examinations assessed in the clinical area and an online exam of multiple choice questions.

    HEE funding for 2022/23
Please note: funded places may be available. You will be notified if you are eligible for a funded place within your organisation once you have applied and been accepted.

This module enables registered and practising midwives and neonatal nurses to undertake a routine physical examination of the newborn (NIPE).

Through a process of advanced skill development, you undertake the routine physical examination of the newborn. The live sessions, recorded lectures and interactive work concentrate on the aspects of the NIPE examination as well as discussions on other complications and referrals. You develop originality in your application of comprehensive knowledge along with evidence-based practice through a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

The degree and master's module run together but there are separate learning outcomes for each, and the level of the exam differs. Each has a separate online platform which provides access to learning resources and online support.

You undertake a minimum of ten supervised neonatal examinations and a final examination of the newborn within your practice area. These examinations come together to form your portfolio alongside evidence of individual learning. You also complete a 90-minute multiple choice exam of 30 questions.
