    Exploratory Studies (for undecided students)

    About

Exploratory Studies is a program that helps students discover the major that best reflects their interests and ambitions. Students are given the space and time to explore, balanced with professional guidance intended to encourage students' proactive career research and reflection. Some key features of the program include the following:

    • Exploring students will take EDPS 10500, Academic and Career Planning, in their first semester. This is a full semester, 3-credit, graded course that allows students to "try on" and evaluate many majors and careers before having to commit to one.
    • Each student is assigned an experienced academic advisor who is familiar with all Purdue schools and degree programs. The Exploratory Studies advisor to student ratio is kept at 1:150, which allows advisors time to really get to know their advisees.
    • A unique course schedule is created for students, specifically designed to include university-core required classes; as well as courses that offer an opportunity to explore majors of interest.
    • Students can remain in Exploratory Studies for up to four semesters (two Fall-Spring school years) but can declare their major any time during that period.

The vision for Exploratory Studies to "be an exemplary advising program in the nation for exploratory students" has remained unchanged since the program's inception and is recognized by many as a model program for how to successfully support undecided students through their journey.

    Entry Requirements

For most first-time college students (future freshman) a complete application includes:

    • The application itself
    • Purdue-specific questions from the application
    • Self-reported high school grades
    • Self-reported ACT or SAT test scores*
    • Proof of English proficiency (for citizens of non-English speaking countries)
    • The application fee (or qualified fee waiver)

Students apply to Purdue using the Common Application. This application requires you to provide a personal essay and answer Purdue-specific questions. View current essay questions.

We accept SAT or ACT scores and have no preference on which test is taken. You may report the best scores from across different tests. If able, you should take one or the other in the spring of your junior year in preparation for the November 1 Early Action deadline that encompasses scholarship consideration.

When you apply, you are able to report best components from different test dates. School codes for Purdue West Lafayette: ACT – 1230; SAT – 1631.

*For Spring, Summer, and Fall 2023, Purdue is test flexible. This means that if a student can take an SAT or ACT, we prefer they do so. However, we recognize that possible cancellations and postponement of national standardized tests due to pandemic restrictions may be impacting students’ applications. With that in mind, we will move forward and review any application from a student who is unable to take a standardized test.

Looking ahead: In 2024, Purdue will return to requiring the SAT or ACT test score(s) for admission consideration.
