    Fashion Design

    About

    The full time Higher National Diploma in Fashion Design is a creative and vocationally relevant course equivalent to the first two years of a BA (Hons) degree. It prepares you for a design and manufacture career across the fashion industries. The course develops professional design and manufacturing skills as well as offering opportunities for research and analysis in related specialist subjects. The course team work closely with several leading fashion retailers which support the delivery of the programme. Networking and liaising with industry contacts is an integral part of the course. Throughout the course you will explore specialist sector garment production skills, gaining an insight into tailoring, garment construction and pattern cutting. Design briefs offer creative challenges through developing illustration skills, graphic presentation, developing social media profiles, studio photography and digital textile printing. As this course addresses the needs of today's fashion industry, there is a strong focus on work-based learning and the course covers a broad spectrum of fashion industry-related topics. You will study 120 credits in each academic year covering specialisms such as trend forecasting, branding, social media profile, studio photography as well as traditional fashion practices. Based on full cohort recruitment, students can expect approximately 12-14 hours timetabled sessions per week. Class sizes are generally 10-15 students. Join a undergraduate community of approx. 500 undergraduates. Our HE programmes achieved 94% Student Satisfaction (2016 National Student Survey). The course team have Industry expertise and practice. You can top up to a full degree by either joining the final year of our BA (Hons) Professional Studies (Creative Industries) following successful completion of this course, or another alternative relevant top up degree . You may also apply to other universities to top up on related degrees (based on entry requirements of chosen institution). Career opportunities are varied across fashion design, construction, marketing and media.

    Entry Requirements

    UCAS Tariff - 32 points
    Standard entry to this course requires a minimum of 32 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate ability to study this subject at university level and who can evidence relevant experience. You will need a portfolio of your work. Following receipt of this work, an interview by phone will be conducted. A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is required for non-native English speakers.

    Fee Information

    If you have to complete a work placement involving working with children or vulnerable adults, you may need to apply for a DBS check. If you are 19 or over on 1 September on the year of entry, this will incur a cost to you of approximately £80. Educational trips are not compulsory but encouraged as part of your experience. Previous students have paid up to £450 for an overseas trip. You should expect to spend approximately £200 per year on arts materials and printing costs for presentation of work. Applicants from the EU or an EEA country (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein) who start / started living in the UK on or before 31 December 2020 will need to demonstrate they have received ‘EU Settled Status’ or ‘EU Pre-settled Status’ to be able to study with us and be eligible to pay the Home tuition fee as indicated. EU/EEA applicants coming to the UK on or after 1 January 2021, and all other international (non-EU/EEA) applicants should contact the International Office directly ([email protected]) to discuss your application options on the basis of your likely visa status.
