    Five-Year Integrated Teacher Education Track

    About

    Interested in becoming a teacher? Enroll in a program that will show you what the profession is all about and give you top-caliber training in the field through Fordham's Graduate School of Education. You'll gain extensive experience in the classroom, working in one of Fordham's partner schools in New York City, as you complete both a bachelor's degree in the liberal arts and sciences and a Master of Science in Teaching within five years.

    You'll take part in seminars and fieldwork during your undergraduate years, learning more about the many roles of a teacher and your chosen area of certification. In senior year you can start taking classes for the master's degree, and after graduation, you'll complete two semesters of both academic work and full-time student teaching, working with a mentor. Overall, the program provides more than 600 hours of comprehensive experience in public schools.

    This program is grounded in Fordham's Jesuit values of acceptance, compassion, and understanding of the whole individual. Its students become highly qualified, reflective, insightful teachers equipped with a broad base of knowledge that serves them well throughout their careers.

    Of course, you'll learn about more than teaching during your undergraduate studies here. You'll also study philosophy, theology, economics, mathematics, languages, science, and the performing arts through Fordham's common core curriculum, the centerpiece of our liberal arts education.

    The five-year track allows students to complete a B.A./B.S. and a Master of Science in Teaching in early childhood education, childhood education, or adolescence education (biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science, mathematics, English, or social studies), or teaching English to students of other languages (TESOL).

    Dual certification and extensions may also be pursued in early childhood special education, childhood special education, early childhood/childhood education, bilingual childhood education, and adolescence special education.

    Students in this program begin to work closely with a Graduate School of Education (GSE) adviser as first-year students or sophomores and apply to GSE in the spring semester of junior year. The program follows a reflective practitioner model, with cohorts of students forming communities for reflection on teaching and learning. Each cohort follows a sequence of coordinated courses and field experiences that link theory and practice.

    Seniors can integrate up to 12 GSE credits while completing undergraduate requirements. During the fifth year of study (including summers), candidates complete their graduate credits along with two semesters (fall and spring) of full-time student teaching.

    Students receive support from a career adviser during the job search process. After completing the requirements for the Master of Science in Teaching, graduates are eligible for Fordham's endorsement for New York State Initial Teacher Certification.

    New York's certification is reciprocal with many states. Graduates can attain professional certification in New York after teaching in the state for three years.

    • Fordham University Statement of Funding or CSS Profile 
      • Fordham University has a need-aware admission process for first-year applicants who plan to attend Fordham for the Fall term on a non-immigrant visa.
      • Applicants who plan to fully fund their study at Fordham are required to complete the Fordham University Statement of Funding. This form will be available to eligible applicants upon submission of the application.
      • Applicants who plan to partially fund their study at Fordham and will apply for need-based financial aid are required to complete the CSS Profile and demonstrate an ability to pay (Expected Family Contribution) at least $30,000 USD per year.

    Selecting a College and a Campus

    • Students must select a campus when they apply to Fordham, either Rose Hill in the Bronx or Lincoln Center in Manhattan. 
    • Students must also select a college when they apply to Fordham, either Fordham College at Rose Hill, Fordham College at Lincoln Center or the Gabelli School of Business at Rose Hill and Lincoln Center.
    • Students are only evaluated for the campus and college to which they apply.

    Am I a first-year student or a transfer student?
    Any student who earns college credit after completing a secondary school diploma is considered a transfer student, regardless of the number of credits completed. Both matriculated and non-matriculated students who earn credit will be considered a transfer. If you have audited a class or completed noncredit coursework, then you may be considered an incoming first-year student. Typically, students who complete language intensive classes, who do not earn credit, are considered incoming first-year students.

    Students who begin their studies at a college or university and withdraw prior to earning credit must contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission via email at [email protected] to confirm their status. In order to be considered as a first-year, a student must withdraw prior to the add/drop date at the institution they attended and provide official documentation (college transcript, withdrawal form) indicating the date of their withdrawal. In addition, to be considered a first year, the student must not have had any financial aid disbursed from the federal government while at the college or university that he or she attended.

    The Office of Undergraduate Admission will exercise professional judgment and consider each student’s circumstances to ensure that, regardless of status (first year or transfer), the best interest of the student’s needs are met related to enrollment.

    Note: Fordham University (its undergraduate colleges, graduate and professional schools) is an eligible institution of higher education that admits as students only persons who (i) have a high school diploma (ii) have a recognized equivalent.
