    The graduate certificate in Forensic Science: Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) will provide you with a deep theoretical understanding of, and training and experience in, the application of proper procedures, methods and techniques of forensic investigation and evidence recovery.

    You will learn to examine and document crime scenes and to handle, package, and transport physical evidence to crime laboratories for further analysis.

    The CSI program fosters critical thinking, knowledge, technical skills, ethics, discernment and humility in preparation for working in the medico-legal realm and with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and the justice system.

    The CSI program prepares you for entry-level forensic science positions.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Completed online application.
      • Fall Deadline: April 1
      • Spring Deadline: October 15
    • Non-refundable $80 application fee (check or money order in U.S. dollars and drawn on a U.S. bank, payable to UNCW).
    • Official high school (secondary school) transcript, translated into English (translation must be certified).
    • Translated transcripts from institutions attended beyond secondary school.
      • If the applicant wishes to receive academic credit, these transcripts (unless from a U.S. institution) must be evaluated by an accredited credential evaluation service. The applicant must choose a company that belongs to the National Association of Credential Evaluators (NACES).
    • TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or Pearson Test of English score unless:
      • English is applicant's native language.
      • Applicant has completed 2 college-level courses in English composition at a U.S. college or university with a grade of B or higher.
      • A student successfully completes Level 4 in UNCW's ESL program.

    Career

    Alumni work as:

    Document crime scenes by taking photographs and measurements, identify and collect evidence, and maintain the chain of custody.

    Assist police detectives in collecting, processing, and analyzing evidence from a criminal investigation.

    Aid criminal investigations by collecting and analyzing evidence.

    Support police detectives and other law enforcement investigative teams.

    Examine evidence that has been collected for possible clues about what happened and who might be responsible for the crime.
