    Course overview

    In our foundation programme for producty design and innovation, you will gain the fundamental knowledge needed for your future undergraduate studies, paving the way toward a BSc in Product Design and Innovation.

    Throughout this programme, you'll engage in collaborative project-based learning alongside peers studying various engineering areas. You'll have the flexibility to customise your learning journey and choose specialised areas aligned with your interests.


    Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation Programme: Product Design and Innovation

    The Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation Programme: Product Design and Innovation programme at Aston University introduces you to the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in the tech world.

    What we will provide
    First-class teaching in the UK’s second largest city, delivered by experienced and seasoned product design and innovation professionals and academics who bring a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom. Use of state-of-the-art facilities, including modern computer labs.

    We are an Adobe Creative Campus meaning you will have access to top-notch software licenses, including Adobe and Solidworks, commonly used in industry. To find out more, visit here.

    It is not mandatory to bring your own device for this course, however if you choose to do so please note will need laptop specifications of i5 or above (or AMD equivalent).

    What you will provide
    You'll be required to think outside of the box, reimagine inventions and empathise with the audiences you’ll be creating for. You must embrace challenges and have a willingness grow through failure. Fuel your passion for innovation and emerge from your time with us as a visionary ready to shape the future.

    What skills we teach
    On this course, you will be introduced to a variety of crucial technical skills such as CAD. You will thrive with the tools needed to create fresh innovations with user-centered design. With a combination of hand and digital sketching, you will develop prototypes to practical test your creations. You will evolve your model-making skills with 3D printing, foam, and clay. Whilst enhancing your ability to work in a team, communicate well, and critically think to solve technical challenges.

    Progression opportunities
    On successful completion of our foundation programme, you will then have the opportunity to transition onto our BSc Product Design and Innovation degree. Recent graduates of our BSc degree course have progressed to enjoy excellent careers. Many have secured positions through their placement year, with notable companies like JLR, Seymour Powell, Dyson, and Mattel. Lots of our alumni have gone on to excel in diverse roles, including Creative Directors, while others advance into managerial and leadership positions with design at the core.

    Aston University is committed to ensuring that every student is fully prepared to take on the challenges of their Master's degree. As such, please note that if you achieve IELTS overall 6.0 (with no more than two bands at 5.5 and other bands at 6.0 or above) or an equivalent acceptable English Language Qualification you will be required to undertake a mandatory timetabled in-sessional English programme to be delivered by Aston University’s Centre for English Language and Communication. Further details will be provided after the enrolment process including timetable and classes you will be required to attend. This is provided at no additional cost.
