    About

    The Foundations for Biomedical Science PhDs Serving Indigenous Cultures certificate program is designed to provide American Indian/Alaskan Native students, and students from other underrepresented groups in science, with a rigorous research and educational program that honors Indigenous perspectives and nurtures a strong sense of well-being and belonging. This program will enhance the confidence and success of participants and their matriculation into strong biomedical PhD programs and subsequently increase the diversity of PhD-level scientists.

    Admissions Requirements

    Applications may be submitted between October and March, and students will begin the program in June. The deadlines listed below are the recommended deadlines. Our committee will begin reviewing all applications on or after March 2nd.

    Applicants must meet these requirements:

    • A tribal member of an affiliated American Indian/Alaskan Native tribe or from a racial/ethnic group that is underrepresented in the sciences
    • Must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher
    • Must have graduated or be in the process of graduating with a baccalaureate degree in a biomedically relevant science from an accredited US college or university (no more than 36 months prior to applying to Foundations for Biomedical Science PhDs Serving Indigenous Cultures certificate program
    • Must not be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program
    • Must plan to enter a PhD program in a biomedical field after successful completion of the certificate program

    Funding Opportunities

    Students are paid an annual stipend to participate in PREP@UAZ. Tuition costs and health insurance are covered by PREP@UAZ.

    • International applicants to Arizona Online campus, Global Direct campus, or a Global Microcampus should choose the Distance Learner (DL) visa type in their Application Profile.
    • International applicants to the Main campus must currently hold a US visa that permits incidental study. 
    • Please verify your visa eligibility with International Student Services before applying.  The application fee is non-refundable and will not be refunded if your visa status is not eligible.  
    • Applicants must meet all Graduate College minimum admission requirements, including English proficiency.
    • Applicants should be prepared to submit copies of their visa documents, additional transcripts, or degree documentation if requested.
    • University of Arizona regulations require that all international students on non-immigrant visas carry the University of Arizona student health insurance plan.
