French with Teacher Certification in French

About

Students who wish to pursue P-12 teacher certification in French must apply to and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Please visit the Teacher Education Program website for the required professional sequence of courses and other important Program requirements, guidelines, and procedures. Students are strongly advised to review the Teacher Education Program Handbook. French majors must have a "B" average in French in order to apply to and successfully complete the Teacher Education Program. In addition, students must pass the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) prior to the Student Teaching semester. Students should consult with the French Teacher Education Coordinator to prepare for this examination. Courses specific to the French Teacher Certification Program are shown below. Teacher Education Professional Sequence Departmental Methods Course: FREN 419.

120 credits of coursework is required for the baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA. Major GPA requirements differ depending on field of study. Consult the Teacher Education Program Handbook for more information.

Secondary School Transcript

Upload or mail your academic records from all secondary schools attended. If your transcripts, diploma, or any other academic documents are not in English, you MUST include an official English translation. Include any exam scores such as IB, AP, CAPE, IGCSE/A levels, 10th +12th.

If you wish to submit a resume or list of extracurricular activities you’ve participated in for review, you can upload this document in your application or on your status page after submitting your application. Please note that a resume is required for Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre majors, but optional for all other programs.

Letter of Recommendation

For most majors, a recommendation letter is not required but is strongly encouraged. Submit recommendation letter from a college counselor or teacher.

Please note that Dance, Musical Theatre, and Theatre majors require two recommendation letters. One of your recommendation letters should speak to your candidacy for your field of study.

Montclair State University considers a number of factors in reviewing admissions applications. Well-qualified candidates for admission have a 3.2 or higher cumulative high school GPA on an unweighted, 4.0 scale, a challenging course load (particularly in junior and senior years), and a variety of extracurricular activities.
Submission of SAT or ACT scores is not required, but, if you chose to submit those scores, they will be considered in the admissions process.
Other factors considered in our holistic review process include: strong letters of recommendation from teachers and/or counselors; a well-written, thoughtful admissions essay; and a commitment to extracurricular engagement, both in school and in the community.
